I have a 2005 LE CC 4X4 Big Tow with 125k. Both of my rear axle seals have blown and I have a ticking/whining noise in the axle. Took it to the dealership and after looking and listening, they decided I need a completely new rear-end instead of a rebuild ($2700). I have a couple of questions, has anyone on here rebuilt theirs or had one rebuilt? Also, does anyone know where I can get a parts list of what is needed along with a relatively inexpensive place to buy said parts? My dad is an accomplished mechanic and has assured me that he can do it. The T doesn't have the locking diff, so it hopefully won't be too difficult. Any advice or instruction is greatly appreciated.

Info on axle seals: http://www.titantalk.com/forums/titan-faq-howto-area/123384-replacing-axle-seals-w-pics.html

If you are rebuilding it, you should consider going with a TrueTrac LSD, which replaces the weak oem carrier and spider gears.

If you do go with a TrueTrac, I suggest removing and retorquing the TrueTrac bolts with thread locker compound prior to install

http://www.titantalk.com/forums/titan-performance-modifications/98388-trutrac-lsd-problem.html

I think most of what you need is in this kit:
NEW NISSAN TITAN REAREND MASTER INSTALL KIT | eBay Call the guy and make sure you have the right year and also he may sell you a TrueTrac. He may also knock the price down a bit if you don't buy through ebay. He might also sell you the Timken Set 10 axle bearings.

Things not in the kit: ring gear, pinion gear, TrueTrac, axle bearings, axle seals

Nissan does not sell new ring and pinion sets. Nobody else sells ring and pinion sets in the OEM ratios. You may be able to get a good ring and pinion set in the 3.36 Big Tow ratio from Arizona Differential. I suggest that you call them.

Note: It would be an opportune time for any rear brake or parking brake work that might be needed. You can buy parking brake kits from rockauto.com with shoes, springs clips. I bought pistons & seals from courtesyparts.com and rebuilt my brake calipers.

Thank you so much for the information. I'll be tearing her down tomorrow and I'll post with the outcome! Also, the dealership instructed me Friday that I won't be able to find the replacement rear axle shafts anywhere but Nissan, is that correct?

Well, good news! My dad and I tore the T down this weekend. No damage to the inner gears, nor the axles themselves. The bearings themselves still appear to be good, however, I'm going to replace them anyway. We think we've figured out what the tapping noise is/was. The parking brake shoes just fell apart when we disassembled everything! Bits and pieces went everywhere. Hopefully this will fix everything. I've ordered my parts and am just waiting for them to arrive. I'll have the new seals and bearings pressed on at a local machine shop and then put it all back together. What a relief; I've really missed driving her! Thanks to Bestatchess for the info. I really appreciate it! I will post again after reassembling to give an update.

Titantalk rocks!

Okay, stupid question...I got the bearings and seals today. As I was unpacking the Timken Set 10 bearings, I notice that they do not look like the bearings I am going to replace. My question...will the bearings look different than the stock ones I'm replacing? I've never done this and want to make sure that I haven't gotten the wrong parts. Once again...Thanks!

According to the timken application catalog the Set10 is the correct part. You might have pulled out a cup and cone design and replacing with the timken which is a solid roller bearing. No problems.....

I think you might be right; I'll post some pics to see if that is correct. The one is the type that is still on the axle waiting to be removed, the other is one of the sets I received today.

The reason it looks different is cuz the bearing in the bag is covered by the race so you don't see the rollers. The ring and bearing are shown on your axle, the race is in the bore in the housing end unless you pulled it out.

If the Timken bearing is two pieces, then BBF is correct, the other part is still in your axle housing.

:crying: Well, bad news. My dad, uncle and I put the T back together last night. Everything went well until i started driving it home. My SLIP and ABS lights came on; kind of expected that. But after getting to about 45 mph, there is a vibration in the back end. A bad vibration...Anyways, to make a long story short, when my uncle and I tightened the axle backing plate, the backing plate bent. I tore her down again this afternoon and found this...my question is, is it possible to buy new backing plates and if so, where? I also have a pinion seal leaking on the front of the rear diff, so I'm going to fix it while I have the T down again. I'm going to order new rear axle seals again, the ones we just installed look like toast to me and would like to do everything at once. If anyone has a part number for the pinion seal and for the backing plates, I greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

For the front differential seal replacement you will need the following:
38189-8S110 Pinion Seal
38165-8S110 Pinion Bearing Spacer Crush Sleeve
38216-8S110 Pinion Nut

It looks like the link bestatchess gave you was for the rear diff, but your changing the front diff pinion seal correct??

The rear backing plates and seal numbers:
43252-7S200 Axle Seal
44030-7S220 Backing Plate Left Side
44020-7S220 Backing Plate Right Side

I believe i mis-typed...it's the pinion seal on the rear differential. My bad! Are these part numbers Nissan part numbers?

Yes, genuine nissan numbers. But obviously the front diff seal info is incorrect if your actually working on the rear.
