Rear axle seal leaks

Found out today from my Nissan dealer while in for an oil change that my rear axle seals are leaking. They want $420 for it.
I see some other threads where this rear axle leak is common. What have you guys paid for the repair? I got 90K miles on it so no warranty coverage.

I might go get another opinion from a shop and see what they say.
Any reason why i should stick w/the Nissan service dept than go to an independent? Is it a fairly simple fix or something that Nissan trained techs need to work on?
Thanks for any info.

They need to (destructively) remove & replace the bearing to replace the seal. It is not rocket science, but does require a press to install the new bearing.

I don't think that anybody that has replaced the rear diff check valve vent with a hose vent has had any further axle seal problems.
$420??? Holy Crap! Surely your local mech. can do it for less than that.

So do they know to put this 'hose vent' in or is that something i should ask about?

What is that anyway? not too familiar with that area...

Thanks for the info
Same thing happened to me last oil change but I have a good dealership. They replaced it on them...no money out of pocket!
$420 sounds steep. My dealer did the job in 1.5 hours or less per side.

Exactly! Check out the local shops.

Also, there was a guy on another forum that put on the breather mod and still had a the seal go. Like a lot of us it was the right side. He even took the breather mod off so the stealership wouldn't blame the mod for the seal failure.

I'm still planning on do the breather mod but it doesn't sound like it's a fix all for the seals.
