Anyone who has had the rear axle seals please report the the National Highway Safety Web Site. Mine leaked so bad I was getting some rear diff oil on the rear brakes. This has become a safety issue and needs to be addressed.

My 04 seals are leaking again!!!! They've been done 3xs along with bearings only maybe 10k miles ago??? What is the problem with these things. Never had a truck leak this bad.
What's different on the 08 and up?

I have the big tow pack n gears if I find an 08 up rear axle I don't care if the gears different as long as that won't throw anything else off .
Do you fix them yourself or do you bring your truck to a shop??

I did mine myself but only because I have a bearing press and im good at stuff like this, but the next time you have your seals chaged weather its you or the dealer, make sure you have the backing plate at the same time!!( The backing plate is between the seal itself and the ABS hub, the plate has 4 studs which mount to the axel tube) VERY IMPORTANT! if this bracket has any imperfection whatsoever you will have problems down the road! this bracket is actually pretty weak too, when i took my axels out of my truck last month this is what I found.

Both rear seals leaked at 75000 miles. Got a whole new rear end out of a complaint from my local Nissan dealer (because I get all my maintenance done through them). Now the seals on my new-ish rear end are leaking after 30000 miles. Has anybody considered a rear end swap..... To a ford 9 inch perhaps? Maybe there is a swap available already........

Look up and do the axle vent mod.
First post--completely new to the Titan, other than riding in a couple friends' trucks years ago. After hearing a lot about the issues, I wanted to confirm before moving forward with purchasing a used 2009 LE 4WD--am I correct that all of the axle seal leak issues were corrected in 2008+ models?
No, that is not true. They do seem to be reduced some, but not 100% solved.
This will fix them all permanently for only $5.50!

I have a 2006 SE 4x4 leaking on the passenger rear, what should I look to spend to get this fixed? 103K miles on the truck.
Just reporting my stats -- 04 4WD, first failure at 55,000, dealer replaced entire axle under warranty with "upgraded part." Second failure now at 138,000, dealer refuses to fix for free. NHTSA complaint filed, not expecting anything to come of it, will be replacing seals myself this winter. The leak is incredibly slow (I check the diff fluid weekly and some weeks I can't even tell that the level has changed at all), so I would dismiss it as a "nuisance" if it weren't for the fact that my brakes are saturated with gear oil.
Now I'm just trying to figure out what year axle they put in there, so I know which seals to buy. I'm thinking if I buy parts for an 04 axle, they will not work.
I spent aver $800 at the dealer replacing the Rear Passenger side seals. I didn't see this thread till after. Not that it would have made any difference. :frown:

Yeah this part sucks. People have been filing complaints since 2004 and NHTSA has done nothing. A class action is what needs to get started.
04 XE 140000, was wondering why my parking brake wasn't holding?
I just purchased 08 4x coils, bilstein 5100's, front/rear slotted rotors and a set of pads.
I guess i will have to address this before I install the rear Brakes:frown:
Hey Chris311 if you are a do it yourself kind of guy. Then you will be into the rear end on both sides for about 200$. That is what it cost me now as for new rear end fluid that can get pricey. I ended up using 75/140 Valvoline synthetic because I didn't know if I had the clutch packs or not. And if I did I needed the synthetic and if I didn't the synthetic would still be fine. Now if I used the regular rear end fluid and I had the clutches I would ruin them. So I ended up spending an additional 72.16 for 2liters of rear diff fluid. Grand total of 272.16. But the labour was a bit of a pain. The emergency brakes were the worst putting the springs back in, but the pulling of the axle went quite easy. I made an awesome puller at work so it came out with ease.
My 04 leaked.....what I found is the vent for the rear axle gets clogged with dirt and rust. If you take it off clean it with brake cleaner and shop air a couple times a year and also spin the cap a few turns at every oil change to make sure its clear.
What happens is pressure builds int the rear end and well it has to go some where.....the weakest link is the seals. Mine stopped leaking after I discovered the vent was clogged.
This rear end is a Dana. The Jeep Grand Cherokees have the same rear end as our trucks....or at least the 04 Titans and they have the same issues.
There is updated seals for these rear ends and they do help but its still a very poor design by Dana.
I still have my original seals in my 04 Titan with over 150000 miles. Tho I do have a new set of bearings and seals ready to replace soon.

Just found out my passenger side seal is leaking. I was quoted 262.00 to have it fixed.

Is there anything I should know before moving forward with the fix? Anything to tell the shop?

The local Midas is going to do it. I've had very good service from them on another vehicle I own. The guys are good to deal with and the work is done correctly.

Not really, the replacement is pretty straightforward. Remove the axle, cut off the bearing, replace seal, press on new bearing, install axle. $262 seems like a pretty fair price. Took me a couple of hours.

If you haven't done it already go ahead and do the Cajun axle vent mod. Will help to keep it from blowing seals in the future. Sometimes if there is a small leak it will actually stop leaking after you install the mod. Jeff is a regular on here (and a great guy) or you can go to his website at cajunbpipes.com.
Thanks. Will look into the axle vent mod. Truck is getting repaired right now.....
Back again.

Has anyone verified if the Yukon axle seal part YMS 9912 will fit the 04-07 Titan? The Yukon YMS 9912 is listed as the outer seal for the Set 10 bearing.

And I'm not back for leaky seals this time. The axle vent mod seems to have done the trick. I'm tearing into it again because the right rear wheel is vibrating and the rear end is making a woof, woof sound. I thought the sound was coming from the front, until we jacked it up and put it on blocks and ran it in 4x4 up to about 25 MPH. The sound is coming from the rear and both rear wheels vibrate, but the right rear is worse. It has wiggle in the right rear axle like the bearing is shot. I'm hoping that is all it is. Anyone else had this experience?

Plus the pinion nut came loose last week. Fortunately, the driveshaft didn't fall out until we jacked it up and I wiggled it. The thing fell right out in my hand. That's how I found the nut was off.
