Best we can guess is that the truck wasn't pulled in far enough
when we shut the garage door.

The major scratch is about as wide as a pencil eraser and around 2" tall.
The other is more like a clear coat abrasion with the paint intact.

My brother-in-law did auto body, yet lives over 5 hours away. He said they would likely want to repaint the whole tailgate. Ugh, that seems like overkill for such a small area.

Is is easy to remove the tailgate to I can just leave it for painting? Any idea how much this would cost? I just hope it matches the paint on my less than 4-month old truck.

you could try autodip. its liquid vinyl i know they have a space grey looks very close to that color and it has flake in it that looks just like auto paint. if you dont wish to spend the $ right now to repaint

As much as I hate painting the whole tailgate, not even for the money reason, I'll do it the right way.
I've been keeping the truck pretty pristine and this accident happens.
