this is how tirerack does it,
http://www.tirerack.com/about/return_tires_wheels.jsp

it may be considered "oversized" since it's not in a conventional 6-sided box and maybe cost extra. otherwise, find boxes to fit or just make some with sheets and tape. you can use the online calculators to determine the cost if you can get an idea of the combined weight as well as it's dimensions.

They are alloy...$500 is what I got for wheels and tires, should have got more but I told everyone I didn't want to ship...I think I lost out on a bunch of bids

Do as suggested, then wrap them in shipping plastic (that stuff on a roll you get at menards, home depot, etc).. wrap them tight and good! FedEx will ship them... probably be about $75 or so. I shipped 4 civic wheels a while back I think it was only $50.

Don't ship them UPS.. you'll get shafted HARD.

You could try a tire store for some empty wheel boxes. Shipping through USPS puts money in my pocket.
