For the newly caught speeders, and those of us soon to be, do any of you use radar detectors? If so what brand and would you recommend it? Or are they a waste of $$$? :poke:

I have had several before but currently use the passport 8500. car and driver claims it to be the worlds best. Lot of other places claim that as well. the valentine sytem is however the cheaper than the passport 8500. i am very happy with this one however. hopes this helps

I just bought Valentine One for my other car a couple of months ago. $450 for the little devices (including the remote display) really hurts but I guess if it saves me even one ticket, it's worth it. I hate spending money when it doesn't change/improve how the car drives :crying:

Like anything else, do your research online. I just went through the process and was leaning towards the Valentine 1 but after my research I went with a Passport product. I found a wealth of info in this website. I decided that the V-1 didn't detect the POP version of radar like the Passport 8500. I went to buy a 8500 at a local dealer and he had a Solo 2 that was pre-owned (but looked brand new).....he couldn't sell it as new so I benefited by getting it at a cheaper price. It blows away the previous Escort radar/laser detectors I've owned and I've owned everyone of their line from the original up to now. The current 8500 and Solo 2 have a meter mode that lets you track multiple radar sources and even lets you see the strength of each in a meter mode. It's not exactly the same as the V-1 's arrows but it is a close approximation. I'll take the better POP detection over having to sacrifice having no directional arrows.

I had the solo 2 before the 8500 and had a few problems of being right up to the cop before it went off. I called passport up and asked them about it and they told that because its cordless the range in much shorter than the 8500. I said that I can hardwire it into the car then, and they told me it wouldn't make a difference because the circuitry would break it down to the same voltage. They advise me to get the 8500.

Good info. They told me that the range on the Solo 2 wasn't as good as the 8500 too. I asked how much was the difference and they said most people wouldn't notice. I got my Solo for $130 vs $330 for a new one......it alerts me better than my Escort 4600 (got 2 tickets and said "enough is enough" with the old technology). However, if the 8500 is that much better, I'll get one of those and give the Solo2 to the girlfriend.....so far mine hasn't been a problem and has saved my a$$ many, many, many times and my wallet, which sits on said a$$, saved $200. Jeez, there is so much saving goin' on 'round here!

Valentine One! I love it, little know secret but they will sell you one that has been "reconditioned" for 10% off. Al you do is ask. Full warranty and replacement for one year! Man it is fun, knowing that there is a radar source around is good. Knowing how many and which direction is MUCH MUCH BETTER. Laser detection works really well also. Recently I was hit 3 times with laser by one guy. He would have got me but the dummy was trying to shoot it through the tinted windows of his cruiser. After I passed I saw him reposition. I hope this helps! I think that Valentine One is suppose to come out with an update in May 04.

Thanks for the good info. I figured the V1 or passport were the better ones. Just was unsure if it was worth the $$, or just a novelty. My friend has a BEL, but it seemed to be more annoying than anything, but I think he always kept it in "highway" mode, which seemed too sensitive and he eventually started to ignore it.

SARKAZM!

Go to radar-detectors.com. Then click learn more. From there go to radar history then click tests. You should find all the info you need as they test all major competitors.

i had a V1 which is hands down the best radar detector out there, just look at the tests. you might as well go all the way and spend $100 more then a passport 8500 and save youself a potential hefty ticket or jail time.
