Start up problem

Hi everyone, I have a 04 Nissan Titan and every now and then when I start it up It will run and then cut off. Everytime I crank it it revs up a little and then the RPMS drop back down to an idle but sometimes it will Rev up and drop back down and just cut off. I asked a guy that works at the Nissan Dealership and he said it might be the Mass airflow sensor but he said it should be flashing a check engine light and it is not. It only does it maybe 2 or 3 times a month.

I have a similar but not exact same problem. The truck will start and then the revs drop significantly below idle. Then it picks up right away and idles normally. It has never dropped so low that it stalls, but I have wondered a couple of times. It happens about three or four times a month with no apparent pattern. I am interested in this issue.
Search the TSBs for fuel pump problems, sounds related.
"Resetting the ECU" will not fix anything. It will clear codes stored but will not fix any failed components. It sounds like a fuel issue IMO. The MAF won't set a code itself but if it is failing you will get codes for other things. The only time the MAF will set a "MAF" code is when it is completely disconnected or an issue with the wiring for the MAF. It doesn't seem like a big issue to me though. I bet half of the Titans I work on do this. It seems to happen more at cold start up. May be just that the fuel pressure isn't quite high enough at cold start to keep the truck running.
Sounds like Carbon Build up to me, easy fix, and if it's not carbon build up you will have a nice clean intake, a friend of mine had the same problem on a 05 X3 BMW with 84 K on it, I took a 100% cotton cloth coupled with a SLIGHTLY abrasive cleaner to the inside of his air intake, removed the chunks of carbon build up, got his throttle and auto choke working correctly again, no more issues during start up or idle....

Beware you might see a bunch of gunk inside the throttle body (DO NOT) take a scrapper, flat head screwdriver, or any other sharp instrument to this you WILL damage the throttle body and cause uneven idling that can lead to an accident; much higher fuel consumption and unexpected jerky driving....

PS: If it's clean leave it alone and move onto other possibilities, fuel pump & presure, plugs, dirty fuel, air fuel mixture, efi system, airflow sensor... etc....

Good Luck !

Thanks everyone for the advice. It hasn't done it in a while but one of my friends is a mechanic and he said it is probably carbon build-up. Thanks
Glad I could help !!!

Johnny08...........first let me say your avatar makes me wanna invest in Google!!!!

Ok......now back to the post, sounds like you are headed in the right direction, but i question carbon buildup so soon. If you find its not carbon buildup......have the dealer check the "idle learn" setting. If it isnt set properly your truck can fall below critical RPM's and stall. Good luck!!!!!
My problem may be carbon buildup and the ECU Reset may not be designed to fix it, but.... since I reset my ECU - with nothing to address the carbon buildup, I no longer have the problem. Could be a coincidence or just in my mind.

I here you on the google hehe...

It was not my truck that had the issue it was zpac2313 it's an 04 with a bunch of miles on it, not that uncommon with so many miles so quickly.

I doubt it's his idle learn especially when the truck runs fine for a while and then dies, if his IAC sensor was bad the truck would idle erratically more often IMO....

So Roy you never did let me know where you got the Extang trifecta cover for $200
