So here's my experience, and why I will never be purchasing another TYC product. I ran into the convenience store to grab a drink on my way to a job with my trusty trailer a few weeks ago, I left the Titan idling and my wife in the truck. When I got back, it was no longer running. I was told it just shut off. We walked the 3 blocks to the house, and grabbed the suburban. My voltage was reading low, so I tried simply jumping it to no avail. No time to waste, I locked it up, informed the store manager it was broken down and would be there a few hours, and swapped the trailer to the other truck. That evening, I had a family member come down with a test light, and we diagnosed it as a fuel pump issue.
Now, I can't complain about the longevity of the factory installed module. It made it 145K often running to the brink of vapors, and with many MANY can-fills. SO I did what has been my go-to procedure for the last 8 years, I hopped on Rockauto.com and ordered a replacement. A TYC brand for flex out of Canada. The part arrived 2 days ahead of schedule and I set about the changing.
2 things struck me as odd when I unboxed it.
1: there was no external strainer on the bottom of the reservoir. BUT on the box, it states clearly several times that "NOTE: All modules have strainers equipped or already built-in". This was my first time doing a fuel pump on a Titan, but I've done several in the past. I took the box at its word.
2: There was a hose barb at the bottom of the reservoir, but it was sealed off, with no actual passage to the reservoir.
The discharge and return fittings, the locating tabs, the plug, were all in the right places and correct sizes and styles. Installed and the 20 gallons of fuel put back in, I cycled the key, and could hear it whirr. I did this several times, and tried to start. It never did. It was about 3 in the morning, so I went back at it the next day. I had my wife cycle the key, and even crank while I depressed the schraeder valve next to the fuel rail, and not a drop. I disconnected the feed line behind the front tire, and cycled it, and lightly cranked myself. Not a drop. Finally, I unmounted, and lowered the tank again, taking off both feed and return hoses, but left the wiring harness unclipped so I could plug it in sitting on the ground. You guessed it, I cycled the key, Could hear the pump CLEARLY now whirring for a moment, let the starter hit a few times, and not a drop.
Part 2: Satisfactory customer service! We informed rock auto as per their return instructions. I have heard horror stories about this elsewhere, but have never had to return a part to them before. 24 hours later, I got a reply that they were sending a replacement free of all charge, sorry it didn't work, no need to send the first back. I spent almost every spare minute of the next week researching what else it could be and compiling a list of next steps if it wasn't the pump. Friday, the second one arrived. TYC, Identical in every way to the first. It was like groundhog day. I went through the whole process again with the same results. I tore apart the first TYC and could find NO reason why it shouldn't draw fuel. The reservoir was full of gas when I took it out, so I know it wasn't starved. I spent a few hours taking it and the OEM apart bit by bit and comparing them, and everything matched except the external contours of the reservoir and some component colors and sizes. Saturday, I spent all day troubleshooting in circles (I won't mention the throwing of hand tools kicking of firewood, and inventing half a dozen new cuss words), had the IPDM box out 3 times, tried 2 different relays in the place of the ECM relay, disconnected every last aux electrical component I ever put in, and reconnected, but everything kept leading back to the pump would cycle, but simply not send any damn fuel to the motor. As a last ditch, I went to auto-zone last night right before they closed and purchased a Delphi module directly from the branch manager for almost 4 times the price as the TYC with his direct assurances that if it IS NOT the fuel pump, he will do a full refund even if I bring it back still full of gas, and gave me his personal cell number in case a cashier gave me grief.
Part 3: Victory!!! SO this evening I dropped the tank again, swapped the second TYC for the Delphi, and re-installed the tank (I'm becoming quite the pro at this) I left the feed line disconnected at the front tire to check it.. and I got a ton of gas coming out the first time I flipped the key. I hooked it up, cycled until I quit hearing the pump, and the Titan fired up faster than it has in 3 years and never sputtered.
The moral is that TYC has made my very short list of brands I will never waste money on again. The list is, in fact: Pro-Comp, TYC.
Even if rockauto won't take return or refund for the pumps, I am happy with their part in this. They didn't make the junk, they just sourced it, and they resolved the issue I presented to them above and beyond what I had expected and swiftly. TYC, however, can take it's products and stuff them up its snowback *** until they are spitting wire connectors.
DO NOT BUY ONE OF THESE MODULES!!!
