New to the forum and being a Titan owner. I just bought(just drove it home today) a used 2005 Titan Crew Cab LE 4X4 with the 7" CST lift with 35" BFG Mud Terrains. I got to say, I love this truck!!!!

BUT..... the only thing that bugs me is that when I go over about 40 MPH, the steering wheel start to shake back and forth and the ride gets pretty bumpy. Almost to the point that I have to hold the wheel w/ both hands.

The owner I just bought it from said that it did that ever since he bought it and thought it was normal. He was the second owner, and I am now the third. The guy I bought it from really did not know anything about the truck, so I wanted to ask the pro's on this forum and find out if it the vibration is a product of the lift/tires/shocks or if the truck has an issue that I need to know about.

Thanks ahead for any info you all can shed and I will update w/ a pic and list of mods once I get acquainted with my new Titan.

So, an update.

I went to Firestone on base and asked to have the wheels balanced. The guy at the shop looked at the wheels and took off the passenger front, the only one w/out any weights stuck to the rim. After he took it off, he said that he didn't want to waste my money b/c the weights were on the inside. He said that the BFG Mud Terrain KM will vibrate just b/c they are so big (35X12/5R18).

He suggested either getting new A/T tires or just living w/ it.

What do you all think? Is he right that I can't do anything w/ the setup I have?

That doesn't sound right to me. I'd think if you got them road force balanced, then the vibration would stop. Mine shakes due to the brakes and can be felt during normal hiway driving. I'm putting new brakes on sometime next week.

Pops,
Thanks for the reply. That is what I was thinking. I guess I will go in and just tell them to "waste" my money and get all 4 wheels balanced.

About your issue, I thought that vibration caused by brake/rotor issues only presented themselves while you where braking?

Not if it gets bad enough. I'm at around 63k miles on the original OEM brakes so it's had plenty of time to get fairly bad. The pads are always directly next to the rotor so any slightest imperfections can be felt in the steering wheel. The tire shop I had my alignment done at were the first ones to actually tell me and confirmed my suspiscion that it's the brakes.

Do you guys think that you might have a bad Motor Mount or Transmission Mount??? Or could a driveshaft be out of balance??

well guys i just swing by Dependable offroad in Anaheim with Steve, his a friend of Gregs and i told him that my truck started to vibrate after i got it align. he said to bring i Thursday since he has some trucks in front of me. He told me that maybe when they align my truck they set my front end straight so that way my tires waste evenly but on trucks that are lifted they have to have inwards pressure so their is no vibration what so ever. ill keep you guys posted Thursday see if that's what causes the vibration

Can you elaborate on what they are doing to the alignment? If I take my truck in to Firestone (b/c they have one nearby on base) will they be able to do the "inward pressure" on my truck? Or do I have to go to a 4 wheel/off road place?

I'm punching out for the field for two weeks so, I won't be able to reply for a bit. Thanks again for the response.

Pops,

How will I know if it is a bad Motor Mount, tran mount, or driveshaft being out of balance? All three sound pretty bad.

I have this exact same problem may truck shakes awful especially at 70 or so. I have a broken transmission mount I know but I dont think that would be affecting it much but it might

It definitely can. As the driveshaft is spinning, it pretty much needs the transmission mounts to keep it stable. I would think you could easily be wearing your pinion seal out by driving it like that. :eyebrow:

That is awesome. Which procomps did you have? Did they say that they couldn't balance your procomps, thus why you had to buy the Nitto's? I'm glad that you don't have the shakes anymore. I'm hoping balancing will help my situation, if not, I guess I'm getting new tires.

What are you doing w/ the old procomps?

yea i had the procomp xtremes. they are the most aggressive procomp tires. still had like 30 to 40% thread left. no i got them balance and didnt shake for about an hour, then later on the day they shook again....:teethmast then the guy at the shop shod me why....i guess one chunk was high and then next was a bit lower and ect....on the thread.....but yea i ended up selling the whole set for $50.
