Hello, I bought a Stillen big brake kit for my 2007 Titan and installed it. At the time I was hauling a boat and needed the bigger stoppers. When I sold the boat, I put the stock brakes back on as I didn't want to wear out the Stillen set in case I got another boat. They are pricey.

Well I never got another boat and I pulled the Stillen set out storage to perhaps sell it off. I was surprised when I took the calipers apart to see the pad apparently were hanging over the OD of the disc. Upon inspection of the disc I see that a portion of the disc that had been machined for pad were, as untouched by the pad. I included some pictures.

Question: Is this normal for a big brake kit to only use maybe 80% of the available rotor area? Did Stillen put the wrong pads in the kit way back when?

I can get the rotors resurfaced as I only have about 12,000 miles on them. They measure 1.103" which is Nissan spec for the factory rotors. How can I find out if there is a better disc pad for these rotors than what Stillen supplied. I would like to bring this kit back into spec. Or maybe it's the way it is. Does anyone have experience with aftermarket 14" brake kits?

Yes, I've tried to ask Stillen this and they don't answer the phone down there or emails.

Thanks

I think you're ok. A lot of rotors get that including our stock ones. The stock ones aren't nearly as noticeable but there's the rust that builds up in the in used area. So nothing to worry about. Disc brake Auto part Vehicle brake Wheel Tire
is pic kind of shows the similar effect. Hope this helps

Something isn't right - too much of the rotor area isn't being touched by the pad. Wrong pad? The pad photo looks like it may have been interfering with something? Wrong rotor? IDK, but I would keep bugging the Stillen guys, and send them the pics.

The wrong pads seem to be the easiest explanation. Its possible they put a stock set for factory brakes in the box by mistake. That would explain the overhang on the outside area and the missed rotor area in the center. Its hard to believe they wouldnt try to use more of that rotor area for braking.

I took a quick look at the AP Racing website (they make the Stillen parts), and they don't list a BB kit for the Titan. They do have other Nissan kits, and "universal" parts. I'm wondering if the Stillen guys put something together that has some design issues.

Anyway, the rotor dimensions are in the wheel clearance template (attached pdf) from the Stillen site. Looks like the rotor may be different dimensions than yours?

Maybe try the Stillen website "chat" capability if you can't get them on the phone?

Good luck!

Thanks for the drawing. Their discs are a bit thicker than what I have. At the time I ordered this kit from Stillen, the AP set was offered at higher cost premium. The Stillen set was purportedly built at Stillen and supplied as such specifically for the Titan. I did get thru to Stillen but was sent to another email address. Hopefully that individual will reply and I can get this taken care of. Lacking that, I would just go to a local brake shop and pick their brain. I am a little reluctant to do so as the rotors are first class and I've seen some the lathes they use at brake shops. We'll see.

After having no luck from Stillen with two emails and a couple phone calls, I went to a local auto parts store to match them up and hopefully get some replacements. I kind of gave up on trying to re-engineer the whole thing. The auto parts store can do nothing without a number.

Thinking that Stillen knows what they are doing and sent the parts they intended to be used, my last action was to call Stillen retail, which not surprisingly, took my call immediately. I ordered replacement pads for those brakes I bought. They still had me in their database and knew what I had so I just ordered their replacements. Thanks
