The CAI will have its own, specialized filter...so I'd say yes, you wasted $50. Go slap your friend! Anyway, what CAI did ya get?

A CAI replaces the entire stock intake system except for the MAF sensor.

Actually the K&N is pretty nice for our trucks. In fact (insert flame war here) I wouldn't be surprised to see that a $200+ CAI doesn't produce that much more gains than a $50 drop in.

Maybe combined w/ the airbox mod...but the filter alone w/ the stock set-up, no way

That was hilarious, a CAI will triple the performance of a drop-in K&N and box mod.

Actually, a CAI will outperform the K&N drop-in w/airbox mod by over 500%. You will pick up at least 10 ponies and 15 ft lbs of torque. The K&N/box mod is good for 2 Hp and 5 ft lbs at most.

I use the AEM Bruteforce CAI. You don't need to oil the filter, just clean it every so often. The K&N and Volant (I think) need to be oiled when cleaned. Some folks use too much oil, and this damages your MAF... truck no workee. I don't remember, but it may be the Volant oil isn't as bad as the K&N oil. Anyhow, I've been happy with the AEM. Works great. Although I think most folks here, especially those who race, go with the Volant. I think it produces slighty better gains than the others.

What's a MAF? (and) Can using too much oil on the K & N drop-in cause the same damage?

Well since we don't have any dynos for a drop in w/ box mod - how are we coming up with these numbers?

While I'm seriously interested in seeing the difference I'm not trying to start any sort of flame war here. I have a K&N drop in now with the box mod and will someday throw a true-blue CAI in.

MAF = Mass Air Flow sensor. It plugs into the pipe on your intake. I would image that too much oil on the drop-style would damage the MAF. It's just that the CAIs increase air flow by quite a bit, so I think it's easier for oil to seep through the pipe. Don't know if you'd have that problem with the drop-in style.

My personal experience was even better than the numbers I posted. With the airbox mod and drop-in, my best 1/4 mile time was 15.36, with the S&B CAI, my best 1/4 mile was 14.85. The only mod difference between the runs was the CAI. Here is a link to another members findings: http://www.clubtitan.org/forums/showthread.php?t=13697
