Just noticed today... my truck has 5k miles on it and there is soo much carbon build up already it's even about a 1/2 an inch on the outside of the tail pipe too. I had a 2005 Titan before this and the tail pipe was super clean. What the heck is going on, anyone else notice this?

Yeah, noticed this on mine also. I was wondering if it was running lean. I have a k&n intake, catless resonated b-pipes and a catback. The tail pipe stays black and sooty. I use top tier gas almost exclusively, regular grade.

I'm thinking that black sooty tail pipe would indicate running rich, not lean. You want to get that checked as rich mixture plays hell with catalytic converters.
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm off base on this.

What kind of driving cycles do you typically do?
Short trips, with the truck spending more time warming up and operating on enrichment mapping, than running warm will tend to do this - on most vehicles with direct injection.

Thanks for the reply. I warm the truck up in the morning for a min. Drive an easy straight 30 miles to work with cruise set at 60, and same home. No real City driving at all. I got my first oil change on Friday. I'll ask the dealer about it too.

Wild. Thanks for the reply. Mine is all stock. I'm in California, with our tough smog laws I tend to keep an eye on tail pipes (not code?) to see how clean vehicles run.

2017 Titan XD Pro4x Gas. I have a lot of build up of black soot inside and about 1/2" up the tailpipe on the outside tip. I noticed a light haze of black build on on the body above the pipe and bumper. Every truck I've driven in the past 10-15 years have all been super clean this worries me. I took it to the dealership at 250 miles and they said it was 'normal' and would clear up when the new burns off so six months later and 3,500 it has not cleared up and maybe forming more. Any ideas?

Sub'd ... I've noticed this too. My Tundra did have a chrome tip added though (not sure if this helps hide soot) but it seems the Titan is a bit dirtier.

nothing wrong with exhaust parts having exhaust on them. it is not an indication of a lean or rich condition in a fuel injected vehicle. has more to do with where the pipe exits and the aerodynamics of the vehicle whether it pulls the gasses away or lets them swirl. if it bothers you put a polished stainless tip on and clean it occasionally.
