I'm thinking about getting a Truck-pal so that the kids and wife can climb into the bed of the truck. I checked with Truck-Pal and they advertise that their ladder can handle 350lbs and stress tested it to 1500lbs.

How much can the tailgate handle? I've read on some of the Tundra forums about their tailgates coming apart when they use ATV ramps - something about the end of the tailgates being weak.

Before I get a Truck-pal I want to have a decent idea if I'm going to run into problems and break the tailgate.

I've had myself and two friends sit on mine without any problems. Three of our fat a$$es equals at least 650 lbs.

I've had myself, a hunting buddy and a gutted deer on my tailgate driving through bumpy fields with no issues.

I was standing at my kitchen sink early one evening and glanced out the window just in time to see my fatazz mother-in-law sit on my tailgate .... and that be-yatch is huge .... a quick inspection after she left reveiled no noticable damage.

I've had no problems loading my Polaris 500 with me on it. The Polaris by itself weighs around 400 lbs.

On my '08, the weight restriction is 200lbs according to the manual, but if my tailgate is ever damaged from any reasonable amount of weight, I will be pissed & the truck will be sold. I think that rating is there for liability reasons anyway.

If a person can stand on the tailgate & damage it, the tailgate doesn't belong on a truck.

Dude, have you seen Heartbreak Kid? The part where the huge mother in law comes in and says that the wedding dress Ben Stillers wife has on is the same one she wore on her wedding day.

They may have dropped that load on there with a forklift. They didn't hold all that up by hand. I doubt just the static weight would have bent it. I wouldn't have loaded it like that though. Tailgate flat and a tight and strong strap to stabilize the load would have been safer, in any pickup.

I believe Tundra has been found to have a design problem with their tailgate, and Toyota is changing it in the future. May have been a recall, IDK.

400-500 is not an unusual load to place on the tailgate to get something loaded up. Use common sense, don't slam the weight on and you should be OK. Watch for any sign os strain as you load it up. Add up all the weight. ATV and Driver.

I don't remember the weight rating of the tailgate, but I have loaded a couple of riding mowers in and out of the bed with steel 4-wheeler ramps with me driving the mowers on and off. I don't remember how much the mowers weigh, but I weigh 160 lbs. I see Titans with 4-wheelers in the bed at the plant all the time without bent tailgates, so I'm sure that it can handle some weight.

A YFZ450, like dut's above weighs about 370# with all the fluids, plus whatever he wieghs... many owners have large 4x4 quads that weigh 500#+ and drive them on and off with no problems.
