This is my theory on why they didnt care about the coolent affecting the performance. It goes back to the old rule of thumb.
Cooler air = More power
Warmer air = Better fuel economy.
now with our engines making well over 300 horsepower and more than 350 ft lbs of torque @ 15mpg on highway, give or take, Im sure they werent worry about the performance. I think they would have been more concerned for the porpose, whichever it may be with some added benifit of fuel economy.
