What's up my Titan folks, so last night I was driving home getting on the freeway on ramp. I got on her(sometimes you can't help it with the power these trucks have) and I know it was skidding it out I can feel that the tires broke loose since the rpms were climbing and tire smoke. Then I didn't see there was like a bump where they forgot to flatten out from something on the black top so the rear end jumped a bit. And after the rear went over that bump while skidding out I started to hear a "clank clank clank clank". I would give it a tiny bit more gas and it wouldn't go. I first thought was my ujoints gave and half my driveshaft is on the floor. Pulled over put it in park and the truck wanted to roll back! (Small incline on ramp) had to put the parking brake on. Drive shaft still in place but if I put it in R or drive the driveshafts spins freely. So I'm guessing it's the rear diff that broke. Had to get it towed home. Tow truck driver guessed the same thing as when he was pulling it with the winch the driveshaft wasn't spinning when the truck was rolling forward. What are my options here? It's a 2007 2wd crew cab.

Clank clank clank is the sound of some teeth broken off the ring gear.
Ask me how I know.

Damn does the yoke going into the diff get damaged too? Yeah it was a clanking sound and that was it. Did you're go just randomly?

That's what I'm thinking if it needs work now. But how would that work exactly? That's the only thing I've never really worked on or have experience in is differentials. Is tru trac a locker or LSD?

And would I be able to put higher gear ratios in there? Might as well since it's going to be open mine has the 293 I think it is. It's not the big tow. So I can get some grunt on the low end

Its a LSD. You can buy gear sets at like 4wheelparts or other suppliers like that for a different ratio, not sure if it will affect cruise control though

That's literally what I've just finished reading. I'm at work so I've only reasearched a bit. But I just read that I might have to reflash the ecu... that sucks

Berto, if you are feeling not confident in working on the rear diff, and you are on the west Coast, maybe contact Nate from Arizona Differentials on Weldon in Phoenix AZ @ (602) 272-4600 or AZ Differential |=0=| Differentials Done Right | Drivetrain Servicing & Repair

Nate built a nice D60 axle assembly for me using the Dana Spicer 4 pinion Power lok diff.

now you may not need one like this, but he can certainly help you do what you want based on your needs...

that's a nice setup, I wouldn't mind running that since it'll be a complete stronger upgrade. But I'm In California I would have to get it towed all the way to Phoenix. Lol

Yeah unless you've got time and really want to learn diff work, AND plan on doing more diffs in the future, this job is pretty involved and requires special tools. Shop recommended.

Tru Trac (I have one) is LSD (AKA "posi traction for old school dudes) and it's awesome for snow or dirt or burnouts or getting the rear end loose (be careful in the wet... Like Walrus, ask me how I know).

BUT you might have other damage. TT just replaces the spider gears. ECU reflash for sure if you want cruise and change ratios.

FWIW I just had weapy axle seals and at the time I did my TT install at a 4x4 shop in CO, it was $1500 including parts (TT and new seals) and labor. Done in a day. If that helps, for comparison.

The cheapest option is likely looking for another NON-BT rear end (caliper to caliper) on CL or your local junkyard. You can do that in your driveway. FWIW

Well I had time to take the cover off the diff today just to see what was damaged. From the looks a small gear is completely broken into pieces (guessing its the spider gear, do open diffs use only one?) the ring gear is damaged on one side, the washer looking piece that's on top of the pin inside the diff case is damaged, the diff case is damaged has small deep gouges in it. And also the pinion gear that's in back of the diff that connects to the driveshaft is also damaged. Jesus. But the axle gears look in good shape from what I can see and feel around except for a few small scratches. But taking it to a transmission/differential specialty shop tomorrow see what they say is going to need replacing. I told them that if the inside needs rebuilding (which it does now that I looked) I wanted to install some type of locker or lsd. (The last picture is the smaller gear that's completely broken)

Unfortunately, it looks like the load sheared both ring and pinion gears on your Titan. That's what can happen when you go over a bump (load drops to zero) and full power allows the rear axle to spool up until it hits! The sudden transfer of all that torque puts a tremendous load and shock through your rear diff and somethings gotta give.

Please update us on what the final assessment is. I'd be interested in knowing what your local shop says the bill will be.

Perfectly opportunity to install some 4:10 gears. Your truck would launch hard.

How do I regain my cruise control back? Or do all trucks loose cruise control after changing gear ratios? I'm reading that if I go with the big tow gears I need to reflash?? But I might as well do 4:10 if Ima regear. What are the cons of going to 4:10 ?

No problem, I'll try and see if the guys at the shop can take pics of new gears and locker/or LSD I go with.

Has anybody installed a Yukon locker in these trucks?
