Titan stuck in 4high!?!?!

Well it was stuck…. Here’s the story.

I drove my truck into my back yard to pull out a small tree (about 10’ high). Since my truck was on grass and didn’t want to spin out so I put the truck in 4 high, then down to 4 low. Drove it about 100’ going forward and reverse. I decided to put it in 4 low just because I hadn’t used it in a few months. Well everything goes perfect, In 4 low at about 2% gas the tree came out super easy. I then pulled out a few dead rose bushes. All came out really easy, all practically at idle. So I switch it back to 4 high (so I thought). I know how to do it and have done if many times in the past with out a hitch. What usually works for me is I put the truck in neutral and let it roll a few feet, that usually dose the trick. I then switched it from 4-high to 2-high. And idled out to the driveway and shut the truck off. Well since I just idled I did not notice the truck was still in 4 low.

Well a few hours later I jump in my truck and pull out of the driveway. I drive 10’ and stop, I immediately knew something felt very different. So I roll forward another 10’ and stop, what the hell?!?!. Then I realize my truck is still in 4 low, but the selector is on 2 high. So I cycle the 4wd switch a few time rolling a few feet putting the truck in neutral setting the switch to 4-high. After the 3rd try I put the truck in drive, roll forward a few feet and hear a loud “thump”. The “thump” was the truck finally switching back to 4-high. Well that’s good I’m thinking. So now I switch it to 2-high but for some reason the truck would not switch out of 4-high!?!?! I mess around with it for a 10-15 minutes with no luck.

So I drive slowly around the block to a big *** dirt lot thinking the pavement is not slipping enough to let it out of 4-high. I drive in the dirt lot for 15 minutes trying everything under the sun but it’s solidly stuck in 4-high. I try turning the truck off and restarting several times, no help. but I then notice something even more strange. You know the display just right of the odometer that shows the 4 tires, It’s simply not there! It’s not lit up, it’s gone!… I tried turning the truck off several more times and restarting and no change. I also notice in the bottom right the “4WD” is lit up. Which is ok I guess because the truck is in 4-high but why the hell is the icon of the tires missing?

The last little oddity I noticed is when I put the truck in park an “ATP” would light up! It’s located in the very bottom right on the cluster. I have no idea what ATP means!?!?! And why dose it only light up in park?

Ok now I’m seriously pissed off and know the truck will need to go to the dealer. Well I was heading to my folks house and they live near the dealer so I decide I will just drive slowly to their house the leave it there since it’s Sunday afternoon. Then I can drop it off Monday after work. So on the way to my folk house (only about 3 miles) I stop into a Lowes since It’s only one mile away and on the way.

The truck drove fairly normal on the street but you can definitely tell the truck is in 4 high and at the minimum you are putting extra ware on the tires. You can tell when you turn there is force on the transfer case. So I just drove nice and slow about 1 mile. The transfer case better be able to take 3 minuets of 35MPH and 5MPH turns on pavement or it’s built way to weak and I will be trading my titan in ASAP.

So I run into lows buy what I need. When I start up my truck my icon with the 4 tires is back! So I cycle the switch from 2-high to 4-high back to 2-high, Roll the truck and bam (actually it did this almost silently), It slips into 2-WD no problem! I’m relieved and drive to my parents. When I leave I hit a dirt road and try 4-high, 4-low back to 4-high to 2-high. Everything works perfect again.

Sorry, long story but thx for reading this far. But now what should I do????

A) Nothing, it was a fluke

B) Take it to the stealer so I can waste time and have them tell me everything seems fine.

C) Other, please post what other should be :)

Ok thx in advance.

I had almost the same issue one time this winter. Just once - 4wd system got all pissed up and wouldn't come out of 4HI. I was on my way to the dealership to say wtf but I had to drop the wife off at her dentist appointment. After she got out of the truck I stopped it, restarted and tried the selector switch again a boom it switched out fine. Then tried going in and out a couple times and no problems since.

Same thing happen to me. Icon never disappeared, but I spent at least 30 minutes messing with the switch. It never did go back into 2 high. Then I used it a few days later and everything was fine. No problems since. The only way I would take it to stealer is if it is still under warranty. If it is, what could it hurt?

My old Nissan Hardbody..back in '92 did that..seems that in the manual, it stated that anytime the 4-wheel drive was used, and then such use was complete, you should come to a complete stop, switch into 2-wheel drive, and back up for app 10-15 feet....

Perhaps the Titan needs this same proceedure? I am going to look in the manual after work!

The dealer isn't going to find anything wrong if everything is working like normal. You will be wasting your time unless it gets stuck frequently or you have more issues with the dash lights.

Like AirtekHVAC said, backing up should un-bind it, but i've done it differently. This was in my cousin's F250 & it was stuck in 4 low. I had him back up with the switch in 4 low, shift to neutral, swich to 2wd, then pull forward, and it went into 2wd.

I posted back in february of problems too. Mine would not come out of 4H while driving. I had to stop, wait a minute or two, then slowly take off and it would go into 2wd. I was towing a trailer on intermittent snow pack and ice, so I was going back and forth into 4H a few times on a long trip. Seems fine now. Until next time.

I dont have my titan yet, but i have a 2001 pathfinder 4x4 that does what you just described. When i have it in 4 high and put it back into 2 hi, it will some times take a while to switch back according to the display. At first i thought something was wrong but it would do it to varying degrees all the time but always switch back to 2hi. I found that when i would begin to accelerate but drop of the throttle that is when it would shift. I just figured that it switched back as soon as load was off of the transfer case. It would never switch back to 2 hi when i was turning, but if i straightened out, after a few yards it would go back. I found that in the winter when it was below freezing, it would sometimes take longer to switch back.

It is possible that it just needs a transfer case oil change or maybe a cleaning out.

:read: On another note, In my research on the titan, i did read somewhere that a few people had trouble with the servos that do the actual shifting of the transfer case and they had to have them replaced.

I got my Titan and have had it for about a week now. I noticed the same thing that you are talking about. When I switch it from 4Hi to 2Hi, it does not go back right away, but I noticed that when I make a right turn, it will do the shift then. One time it took a long time to shift back. When I reversed it shifted back to 2Hi. I guess it just has a sluggish transfer case.

There needs to be slip on one wheel. So basically taking a turn like above is causing one tire to turn faster than the other and will cause the slip that is needed. I always do a slalom move when switching it back out, and it seems to help.
I have the same problem as Rescue Titan, so I noticed the same if I make a turn it would return to 2Hi. So what Titan TX said I'll try
