I think I need to replace the cables on mine because my tailgate when open rests on the bumper's plastic top cap piece and wore the paint off from rubbing. I don't see any signs of my tailgate actually failing though.

I had tailgate issues a few yrs ago.....it was the bolts that the cable clips attach to. They backed out of the hole for some strange reason. Maybe vibration from the dreaded "death bed shake?" Regardless I slapped some loctite on them and tightened them back up. No issues since. Funny because I had a few members telling me the same things they are saying here. LOL
