I think I need to replace the cables on mine because my tailgate when open rests on the bumper's plastic top cap piece and wore the paint off from rubbing. I don't see any signs of my tailgate actually failing though.

You should look into bedlining the area where your paint got rubbed off, I hear some guys on TT swear by the stuff!:teethmast
