I read somewhere that Nissan originally had it at 10:1, but then reduced it to 9.8:1 to allow for the use of regular 87 octane. Hope this helps.

i doubt they had to drop compression .2 just to run on reg gas. there are many engines with 10:1 or even higher that are designed to use reg.
