I have a new brush guard I am trying to install. It connects using the tow hook front bolts. I am trying to remove the bolts with out removing skid plat and front bumper/crome cover. Is it possible? I have them loose but I don't think I have enough room? The link is the one I ordered and have received. There realy is no directions.

I ordered it off ebay, I would post a link but can't.

You will have to drop the skid plate to get the bolts out. At least I did on my 08. No pieces of the bumper had to be removed though. Good luck and post some pictures when you are done.

I just did this on my 08 last weekend. You'll want to remove the skid plate - it's very easy just four bolts of the 10mm size. The son of a b1tch about the process is getting the bolts off the tow hooks.

I ended up having to use an impact wrench on the ones further back towards the engine compartment and a long wrench with an even longer metal pipe as a cheater bar on the ones under the bumper.

Here's a tip - on the ones under the bumper you should be able to reach with a wrench going through the front where the tow hooks are. this will give you a clean area to jam on that metal pipe.

08's must be different than 05's I got the skid plate off and a part of the chrome from bumper is keeping the front skrews from being completely removed. The skrew hits the bumper and can't be taken out. No one else has had this problem?

I just did this on my 08 and while the front bolts were tight, they came out without issue. Do you have an XE? The plastic bumper might be different than the metal on my SE. Otherwise you may have some damage?

You may not be able to remove just the front bolt, but remove the rear one first and the tow hook should move out of the way with the front bolt still in just the hook...

I removed the rear one and got them out. Thanks, I must have bought the most difficult brush guard to install ever made, with no instructions, ye ha. It is on there, but not overly secure. It came with two additional brackets that mount between the bumper and grill. I am pretty sure I will need to remove grill. Ok, any tips on grill removal.

Pretty much, the actual one I bought was from gogoparts for $229 shipped on ebay. Maybe that one comes with some instructions. Removing the grill has got me a little worried, I can see me busting it.

All I say is don't use a torque wrench. I snapped a Grade 8 bolt,:ftard: which must mean the bolts must not be up to spec. I am either stronger than I realized or I have to get a calibration on the wrench.:gossip: Luckily, I was able to use a bolt removal tool to extract the threaded bolt. :deathsent I just used one of the original bolts to replace it. :bangit: All is good and safe, I hope....smiling.:Warp:

I removed my tow hook bolts on my 06 LE Crew Cab to install the OEM Off Road Skid plate. There was enough clearance for the bolts on the passenger side to remove both bolts (with a lot of muscle/cheater bar) with minimal interferance from the bumper. On the driver side though, I had to remove a couple of bolts from the front bumper corner piece to give it enough play to remove the bolt. I might have been able to do it without removing anything from the bumper, but it was easy insurance to prevent bending the bumper.

To remove the grill is fairly easy. You'll need a light and a long long flat head screw driver.

On the top of the grill you'll easily see four plastic square head "screws" that look like a flat head would fit them. These turn so the square heads allow the grille frame to slide through them.

Next find the same looking heads on the bottom of the grille. They are set back so you need the light and the long screw driver to find them. There are three there.

Next there are four more points to unlock on the side of the grille. Two on both sides. Shine the flashlight in between the headlight and the grille on the sides and you'll see two 'posts'. Each post has simple clips keeping them attached. These clips need to be pushed in towards the center of the vehicle to losen them up. I found the top clip you can access going through the top of the engine compartment by the lights. The bottom ones you can access by going from underneath the vehicle.

After those are loose comes the two important steps.
1) use equal pressure from all sides (two people doing it helps) to pulls the grill straight out.
2) remove the clips from where the attach on the vehicle and reinstall them back on the removed grille. When you are ready to put the grille back on it will be a simple as lining up the clips with their holes and pushing straight back.

i got a 2006 le off road pro 4x4

ok i just bought a daystar baja bar for the front, the big mac daddy one. i know i gotta remove the grille and skid plate. i wanna know after i remove the 4 10mm bolts for the skid plate if there is enough room to get a impact gun up onto the 17mm bolts that hold the tow hooks in palce.

after that is it possible to mount both the baja bar and the skid plate or is it not possible after mounting the bar?

There's enough room to get to an impact wrench on the rear bolts but not the front ones.

I purchased a Hunter Bull Bar off of e-bay, but I couldn't make it fit without losing the skid plate. So in the garage it sits.

so bassicly there is 4- 17 mm bolts that hold those suckers in place, two per tow hook and if i get the rear ones out with my impact, will they slide out/forward or will i have to snake a 17mm wrench in there and try to shock out the other 17mm with a rubber mallet?

and i cant run that stock skid plate with that bar on . damn...

Use a standard wrench on the front ones but go through the front of the bumper where the tow hooks come out. With your wrench and then a cheater bar attached to it for more leverage they'll come off.
