Tranny not wanting to shift sometimes

3264 Views 14 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  titanss
it doesnt happen everytime but enough for me and my brother to notice it and it doesnt give me a good feeling...

it usually happens when im speeding up to enter a freeway or while passing someone.

I believe that im in 4th gear when i push the gas, it downshifts to 3rd gear and then i start going. the problem is that sometimes it does not want to shift back into 4th gear.

i'll toggle my gearshift from left to right and then it'll pop back into 4th gear.(i move the shifter from the D, left to the 4, then back to the D and then it shifts gears.)

any ideas on why this is happening or a fix???

i have a 2005 Titan with about 39k miles. would changing the tranny fluid help or is this a bigger issue??

come on guys...am i the only one with this issue????

any ideas???
What BD tune are you running?
Does it Not shift at all, or does it shift and it feel like it goes in to Neutral.
im running the regular power tune, not the performance power tune with 91 octane.

when it gets up to where it should shift...its just wont, it'll run at the same RPM and just stick there. if i wait for a good 5+ seconds, it'll eventually shift.

i don't like to wait because to me, it doesn't seem right so i will either let off the gas, then give it gas and then it'll shift or what i normally do is move the gear shift over to 4, then back to D and it shifts instantly.

ETA: its been doing this before i put the BD tune on it.
Its time to flush the trans. When I am getting close to 30,000 miles mine starts doing the same thing.

Sounds like a valve is getting stuck or one of the relays in the TCM is going bad.
i just took the truck in for the IPDM recall last month but im guessing thats different than the TCM relays...

stupid question but which would be better to go to....Dealer or Transmission shop??

Maybe a gear shop ... What diameter tires are you running, and do you have the 2.94 gears or the 3.36 gears?

Mine didn't have any issue with my 33.5" M/T's but with 33.98" Terra's it does the same thing. In my case it's the gearing change from the larger tires affecting the torque converter locking it into overdrive. I would think it would happen with even smaller than 34's if you have the 2.94 gears.

Little tow gear and had 275-70-18's, 33.2" tall, on my Titan and never had shifting issues.

Wonder what it would be for most 2.94's, I know that not all of the 3.36's have issues with 34's, but on mine it was noticeable as soon as they went on, and they are 11 pounds lighter than the 33.5" tires which never had the issue.
I have the big tow package with the stock gears it comes with and the stock rims. i did switch to the 275/70 18 BF Goodrich All Terrain tires but this was happening before the switch.

it looks to be narrowing it down a bit...
Wouldn't be a problem with your 3.36 and a 33.2" tire. Maybe one of the other suggestions.
Have you changed your fluid? I did the drain and fill on mine, (5 times a few months apart, this gives close to 90% new fluid), and it is way easier than even doing engine oil/filter changes. http://www.titantalk.com/forums/tit...2468-transmission-drain-fill.html#post2156564

i saw that thread and i hope to do it next weekend when i get some extra time.
Even if you do not have a SES or the AT light is not flashing, there may be codes stored in the TCM. Most tranny/mechanic shops can read the codes for you, a standerd code scanner will not read the TCM codes. My tranny and mechanic have the Snap On code reader that can readr them.
