Why is my tranny dip-stick bolted down? Is there any compelling reason why I shouldn't leave it unbolted all the time so I can check whenever I want without having to find a wrench to do so?

probably don't want dipsh!ts putting in the wrong fluid. Nissan seemed to make sure people only use the J-Type fluid that is recommended

That's probably the most important reason, may keep out a speck or two of dust but I doubt that is the reason.

you shouldn't need to check your transmisson fluid that often unless it is leaking. No leaks and you have no fluid loss.

ya... i agree. i'll leave the bolt on. i installed my tranny temp sensor over the weekend and initially didn't screw it in nearly enough (it's hard to see and i was just guessing the amount of torque i was putting on the wrench). it was leaking a bit until i realized it needed to be tightened down way more. based on how much i added last night, i lost about 8oz of fluid. not too bad i suppose.
