tranny wont go into reverse after being in drive, have to turn off

i have a 2004 titan, when i first start the truck it will go into reverse, however if i drive it around and put it into reverse, it acts like it is in neutral. I have to turn the truck off and back on and then it will go into reverse.

when working it shifts in nice, it spins the tires in reverse

it sat for about 3 months, i hooked up a jump box to it and when i went to start it the gauges were going crazy and still wouldnt turn over, i trickle charged the battery and started, i am not sure this had anything to do with it, but it had always shifted fine up until then.

It sounds like your reverse pack is on its way out. There is a snap-ring that is known to be dislodged from its position which results in loss of R.
I would get to a transmission shop and have them run line pressure tests on your T.

Good luck
hmmm, i will check into the shift solenoid, but since turning the car off then back on, it sounds like something that controls the solenoids that gets cleared out after turning it off
Ya I had just read your other thread on this issue and seen you had said about having a shift solenoid code.
You very well could of did damage during your battery woes but I am thinking it is internal. If you end up at either road, needing a rebuild/O/H or needing to replace the solenoids you are looking at $$.

If you read this thread it goes through my transmission woes and you may be able to get a understanding of if your truck is acting similar. There are also pictures of the snap-ring I mentioned above. Before I pulled my transmission out it would have reverse from a cold start and last maybe 25-30 minutes until the fluid got up to temp and that piston couldnt maintain proper pressure which resulted in tearing of the seals on said piston and excessive wear on the frictions and steels of that clutch pack.

If you believe it is electrical I would have the codes cleared and see if the DTC comes right back w/ ignition on, ignition on running, or what sets the code.

DTC P1774 LOW COAST BRAKE SOLENOID VALVE FUNCTION PFP:31940 Description ECS00B17
● Low coast brake solenoid valve is turned “ON” or “OFF” by the TCM in response to signals sent from the PNP switch, vehicle speed sensor and accelerator pedal position sensor (throttle position sensor). Gears will then be shifted to the optimum position. ● This is not only caused by electrical malfunction (circuits open or shorted) but also by mechanical malfunction such as control valve sticking, improper solenoid valve operation.

Might wanna see if you can get a admin to merge your two threads or close this one and just use one so it is less confusing and less clutter

Hope you get it figured out!

Cross your fingers and hope it doesn't come back.
+1 agreed,

I would also strongly suggest if you keep getting this code reoccurring or the symptoms you described above to take it to a local reputable transmission shop that is familiar w/ Jatco transmissions and has the proper tools to do a diagnoses. If they have said tools and knowledge they should be able to determine if it is electrical or internal.

Good luck and glad to see you opted to drop the pan and inspect the filter.

I know prices vary from state to state, shop to shop but briefly looking on autozones website a REMAN transmission can be had from $2,800-4,000. Note tho that some companies do not put in the upgraded parts which in the case of the snap ring failure would be something I would check on and shy away from if it wasn't done.

This transmission is pretty stout from OE and I would see no reason to have to invest in a high dollar performance transmission. Maybe red alto frictions and kolene steels if one is seriously putting down some power but stock frictions and steels set up properly along with a Transgo shift kit, new converter and some other odds and ends in the VB/pump along with a decent cooler this transmission shouldn't give 90% of drivers any issues/problems.

Granted you aren't out putting it in a swamp ditch and going from R to D continuously just spinning the tires in 4x4, if one is that type of driver they should probably get a manual.
