tranny would not shift

I was pulling a 3600 lb trailer when the check engine light came on. The at light blinked 3 times and the truck would not go past 40mph. I uhooked the trailer, restarted the truck and drove it to see if it would continue acting strangely. The truck shifted fine. What exactly happened?

Unhooking the trailer had nothing to do with it. Restarting the engine reset the ECU. I still have no idea though why it did that. I'd have it checked out.
Go get the code pull, that way you know exactly what the SES light is for. What gear did you pull the trailer in?
I think you heated up the tranny.....it sends the truck into limp mode.

I pulled it in drive. I have been towing this trailer for about one year five days a week and have never had a problem until now.
Actually when I had about 35000 miles on the truck, a checkflow valve(runs from transmission to radiator) busted and transmission fluid started coming out of radiator which then caused antifreeze to mix with tranny fluid. The dealership fixed the problem by replacing valve and flushing tranny and radiator.
I don't see how this could have caused the problem.
most likely some limp mode.

if you turn off the engine while driving and restart (pop it in N first though...) you will lose overdrive and have to park it and restart to fix it. weird isnt it?

I don't want to know how you know that...
