Good evening,
I did a quick search for this problem but had no luck with any results.
I have a 2005 Titan crew with a little over 92,000 miles on it. I had the transmission flushed at the local Nissan dealership late last year after I snapped the line of the transmission cooler in the radiator. This happened when the truck was off. I noticed a little coolant leaking on the garage floor and found it to be coming from where the cooler line goes into the radiator. I tightened it just a little (so i thought) but actually eneded up snapping the line. When I started the truck I heard fluid pouring on the ground within just a few seconds. I immediately shut the truck off and realized that transmission fluid was pressurizing into the coolant overflow tank causing it to overflow. I left the truck sit and ordered a new radiator. I replaced the radiator and then I had the truck flat bedded to the Nissan dealership. It was winched up onto the flat bed. The truck was never driven or ran in this condition. I did not want to circulate antifreeze throughout the transmission. I was hoping that it had been kept to a minimum. The truck ran at most 10 seconds when i snapped the line. Again. The truck was flat bedded to the dealership. They flushed the transmission twice. I have noticed that the transmission just doesn't seem right. I can't honestly remember if the transmission shifted this way before the incident or not. Here is what I've noticed. When I am cruising along at a speed of 45 and above and start to push the accelerator down to increase speed, just as the transmission starts to downshift there is a shudder. It shakes the truck. After the transmission downshifts the shudder goes away immediately. The shudder is like a bad miss in the engine. I don't think its with the engine though. It will shake you pretty hard. Also.. If I'm cruising at approximately 45 MPH and nail the gas, the truck will downshift very hard. It would almost seem like its going to snap the driveshaft. The truck does have the tow package.. I don't think this would have anything to do with what i'm experiencing. When the truck is cool and the transmission is cool the transmission will shift fine. No shudder. It acts normal. I pulled the transmission dipstick tonight after a 25 mile drive. The fluid is not burnt and looks clear. I did notice that the fluid is about 1/8 inch above the hash mark on the stick. The transmission is not overheating, there is no leaking and there is no diagnostic lights or codes. The transmission shifts on time and shifts fine other than when its suddenly floored or gradually increasing speed to the point of having to downshift. I dread taking it to the dealership... Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance!

It sounds to me like your transmission may have seen some coolant, but you can try a couple things before you condemn it.

First off, make sure you have good grounding. It may sound ridiculous, but you must have a good ground wire joining the transmission and/or transfer case to the frame and body.

Does it shift hard when you're driving in manual mode? Mine does the hard downshift too, but only in normal mode coming out of 5th into 3rd or 2nd.

You could also try Dr tranny from Lubegard, I've used it and it will smooth out certain kinds of hard shifts.

I don't think it shifts hard in manual. Would this be at wide open throttle?

I can start out at a dead stop in automatic mode and floor the accelerator. The transmission will shift perfectly through all of the gears hot or cold. I just get that stupid shudder when the transmission gets to operating temperature. Only when I'm slowly pressing the accelerator to the point that the transmission will downshift. The shudder goes away after the transmission downshifts.
I didn't drive the truck with the possibility of coolant in the transmission fluid. The truck may had run 10 seconds when the line broke. You think the transmission could be bad because of that?

Thanks

If I floor mine quickly while cruising in 5th, it'll downshift kind of hard. If I lay into it gently it gets a chance to think, and works well. I also have the infamous harsh 2-3 shift.
You may want to try the grounds, or at least make sure the factory one is intact.

Mine went from the exhaust to the transmission or transfer case. I didn't have any real shudder issues, but my overdrive started working noticeably better....No placebo effect there.
I'm not saying a ground will fix yours, but it's one of those stupid things that has to be ruled out.

Talk about resurrecting an old thread..
I do not drive this truck very much and with winter I have not messed with this problem at all. I do have some new info.
The factory ground is still there and it is tight. I have noticed that if I drive the truck in regular drive (not overdrive) there are no problems at all. This shuddering only occurs when the truck is in overdrive and in lock-up and the truck has been driven to a warm temp. It will shudder and shake you pretty good when the truck is in lock up, easing into the gas or cruising while in overdrive and in lock up. Once the truck goes out of lock up or downshifts then the shuddering will stop.

This sounds like what happened to @Pork Chop with his 2005.
I think his ended up needing a torque converter.

My torque converter was having issues locking up after getting coolant in the transmission from the broken line.

The independent transmission shop spilled and filled two cases of fluid through it and it's been fine since then.

It happened in 2013 and I've put another 60k miles on the truck with no issues.

if this was a problem with my truck, I'd take it to a good trans shop so they could hook up a scanner to observe the trans while operating. If there's a slipping torque converter clutch showing on the scanner at the time the shudder happens...problem solved. Bad/wrong fluid is the other most noticed issue causing shudder....according to my guy. Given your described events in the original post.....another area that would be the next place to consider....the valve body assembly. Pressure flushing transmissions has been known to mess with the valve body assembly from time to time on all sort of AT configurations across brands. Not saying that's your issue, but it would show on the scanner if it was.

I wanted to update this.. I needed up replacing the transmission and torque converter. I kept looking for a used transmission from a truck with the same milage. Finally found one out of California. My truck had right at 98,000 miles when I finally found a transmission. The replacement transmission came from a really nice looking truck that had been smacked in the rear side, no front end damage with about 98,000 miles. A guy I go to church with owns an auto repair shop. He did the replacement for me. He also put a new front seal in the transmission. This has been over a month ago. The truck shifts perfectly. I finally have that issue resolved...
Thanks for the advice given on this thread.
