HI everyone,
I am in the market for a new King Cab SV 4x4 Titan, in Navy Blue. Based upon the fact that the Titan is usually near the bottom in full size truck ratings, and the fact the the Titan is not that popular I assumed that I could get a great deal. I have read MANY posts where people say if it is not at least $10,000 off sticker, simply walk away. Well it seems that none of the dealers that I have called really want to deal.
On an SV King Cab 4x4, the sticker price is about $33,000. My goal is to purchase the truck for nothing more than $26,000 Out the door, with all tax, tags, and fees included. If they would sell it for $26,000 OTD, the actual price of the truck would be about $24,000; which is still more than the $10,000 off sticker. Does the price that I want to pay seem fair and just, or is it too high? too low?
So what am I doing wrong, I aasumed the dealers would jump at the chance to sell a Titan? What is a number that I should aim for?

Thanks,
Zack

Thats the strange part, I am not acting like I need it or want it badly. I have been firm, and not willing to bend. One area of difficulty is that fact that every dealer I have spoken to is a good distance away, but they have the exact truck on their lot. Everything has been a phone call...

Well it will be financed, but that will be done on my own. In their eyes it is a cash deal. Since these have all be phone calls, is there something different that I should say over the phone as opposed to in person?

Also I am in the NY/NJ Metro area, so that might change the price a bit?

Thanks,
Zack

2011 Nissan Titan SV 4WD 4-Dr Ext Cab V8 Prices
MSRP Invoice Price Destination Charges
$32,260.00 $29,211.00 $975.00

Invoice+dest=$30,186
Cash back offers: $4850

Invoice/dest-Cash back= $25336 x 1.09%= $27616 + tag/title + doc fees (if applicable).

NJ Sales tax: 9%

Well, there's your problem right there. Even if the dealer's got a holdback, you're eating into the holdback even after the cash back. No dealer is going to do that unless they're seriously desperate. They'll simply hold the vehicles if/until Nissan comes up with more incentives. $28300 sounds like a pretty fair deal based on the numbers. If there's another $200 or so for registration & title, you're getting the vehicle for $2k less than invoice. The dealer's probably walking with a couple hundred dollars profit on this vehicle, from the holdback.

Don't believe everything you read on the internet of guys walking away with $35k retail trucks for $25k out the door (which includes tax, title, etc). No one is going to tell you on the internet that they got snookered on their car deal. Don't you realize that everyone on the internet is a kingpin wheeler-dealer when it comes to buying cars?

I just purchased a 2011 CC SV and they said I had two choices. Either a lot of rebates and a higher APR or a 1.9 APR and less rebates. I took the lower apr. The also massaged the price with a couple rebates as well as giving my double what my trade was worth. They have a lot of different ways to make deals.

financing will get you a better price, but use the dealers bank/credit union. the cash thing is not true anymore in most cases.

the dealer gets a kickback from the finance company for sending them more business. Financing a 25k dollar vehicle at 4.5% will get the finance company around 6k over 72 months.(i think thats what my last vehicle was but not positive) the dealer got a check for 500-1000 im sure.

So why would a dealer sell a vehicle for cash for less money? when threw financing through a bank they can get more for the vehicle(than cash), a kickback from the finance company, and the finance company gives them their full amount of the vehicle price.Thats basicaly cash as far as the delaer sees it.

In house financing could be very different. it would make sence that cash would work then.

It might be a combination of factors. I live in the NY/NJ metro area as well and I don't see hardly any Titans. Also my dealer (Ramsey Nissan) usually only has one or two in stock at a time. Might be harder to haggle a truck when they are not staring at 25 in the lot. When I traveled to Alabama I thought I died went to Titan heaven. Titan's lined up at the dealers.
You will do much better in person than on the phone. Once they have you on the lot they are more motivated to get you to drive away with a new truck.

4x4 has a demand here

I remember when I was getting my Altima it was like pulling teeth to get a few hundred off the retail price. I absolutely hate car dealerships.

I hate even more now that these dealers near me aren't even putting price tags on the cars and you have to "go inside" and sit down with the salesman just to find out the sticker price. I got kind of mad last time I was there. I told the guy I don't want to waste 30 mins going inside just to find out the dang price. ::gets off soapbox::

Maybe I'm just a beeotch.. but when I go I don't deal with their crap.. I tell them what's going to happen and if it doesn't I bounce.... deff go in, they don't know how truly serious you are over the phone... plus you've never driven it (yes its new... but can still have problems or something you don't like about it) 4x4 changes a lot.. only other suggestion is flying an hour or two away somewhere else and getting a better deal on a 4x4.. somewhere its not needed as much!

Hello - just joined the forums. I too am looking towards purchasing a new Titan.

Zack - how far are you willing to travel? I live in the Lehigh Valley, in PA (Easton, Bethelehem, Allentown) and there's a dealership out here called Rothrock that offers internet special prices. The website has a 2011 Titan SV King Cab 4x4 Navy Blue listed with an Internet Special pricing of $24,820. Just hop on Rt. 78 and take it into PA, then continue until you hit the exit for Rt. 309. Take 309 North until you reach the Rt. 22 exit and take Rt. 22 East until you hit 15th St. (you'll be in Allentown). They are RIGHT OFF of Rt. 22 15th st. exit. Enormous, huge Nissan/Dodge/Jeep dealership.

Hope this helps!

I unfortunately have to wait until late winter/Spring 2012 to purchase mine :(. Saving for a down payment ($2000 + trade-in of my 06 Cobalt LT w/74,000 mi.). Will be financing mine as well. It will have to be a crew cab being I have two kids; one in a front facing seat and another in a rear-facing car seat.

I've used USAA's car buying service to buy two cars in the last 6 months. They have gotten me some great deals. I punched in a 2011 King Cab SV 4x4 with no additional options and here's what I got for the 10016 zip code and Nissan of Manhattan:

MSRP = $33,235
Invoice = $30,386
USAA price is $28,886 minus Nissan incentives of $3,500 for a final cost of $25,386 (plus TT&T)
Savings off MSRP = $7,849

Many people do get $10K off of the MSRP for their vehicle but it generally is $10K off of a $40K to $45K truck. Not a $33K truck.

Look at it this way $7,849 is 23.6 % off of your $33,235 truck. $10,000 off of a $43,000 truck is 23.25%.

Thank you for the tip! I called, and the truck was sold two days ago....

I am doing all of the dealer searching using autotrader, but all the dealers are not on there. However I don't know of any other way of finding a large area search.

Go to nissanusa.com. Use the build you Titan feature and change the zip code. Have it search in a 150 mile radius.

Ah bummer, sorry man :(. It was worth a shot. One website you could also try is:

AutoShopper.com - Find Used Cars, New Cars, Sell a Car, Search Car Dealers. It's a fairly easy to use website, showing everything around your area and then some.

Best of luck!

The USAA pricing is always spot on.
So is Edmunds dot com.
A hungry dealer will beat the USAA price by 1000 bucks on a Titan. And you get the rebates.
You just need to find that dealer.

Capital One Auto Buying | New Car Pricing

I used the capitalone.zag.com right on the salesman computer and got my '10 last Dec for 10.3K off a 38K truck. He first said that Capital One is not selling trucks and he can not do it, I then walked back to my old truck and he came running at me with his manager and said OK.

good luck
