A little back story: couple weeks ago I installed new exhaust, tuned it with UpRev, and this week I installed exhaust and had to re tweak my map. So this morning I drove the truck about 50 miles to town, and turned it off. When I went to start it, it cranked and cranked. So I set it to Map 1 (the map I always use) and it fired right up. Started driving and noticed the SES light was on. I had the codes checked at Autozone (I forgot my scan tool in my other car) and they said it was P1706 which is the neutral safety switch, which according to them is in the transmission control module, neither of which they could get. So after looking online I'm finding several different parts for the TCM. Anyone else had a similar issue? Truck still drives fine, just the starting issue and check engine light on.

So now it's throwing a P0850 code which is for the Park/Neutral Switch. Parts stores can't get that. Nor can they get a TCM, and I can't even find one online because it gives me several different parts. Also I changed the instrument cluster before that started because mine didn't have a tranny temp gauge. Could that have anything to do with it? Now sometimes it starts up fine, others I have to turn the key several times to crank it before it will fire. I called Nissan and they had no idea. Anyone have any clues?

You don't say how long between the cluster change and the codes, but....put the old cluster back in, clear the codes and see what happens. If they return, you have an issue with tranny control. If it doesn't, the culprit has been eliminated.

I drove about 50 miles before SES light came on. I've been at work and haven't made it home to grab the old one yet. But you think the cluster could have something to do with that?

Apparently the cluster was the problem. The one I got was from the same year and model truck, but after talking to Nissan, they said each cluster is programmed to each truck and theres a chance it will not work on one truck like it did on the one it came from. So that solved the starting issue, gonna drive it later this afternoon to see if check engine light comes back on or not.

It's going to need a new TCM before too long. Soon it's not going to start at all.

The P/N position switch is incorporated in the TCM, the TCM is built into the control valve assembly bettor known as the valve body.

So you'll need a new valve body , quite expensive and quite a common problem.

Not really a DIY job , before replacement the internal operating program needs to be pulled out and saved. When the new (blank) control valve is installed the program needs to be downloaded to it so it will work as designed.

I have had zero issues with it since I installed the old cluster. And I asked nissan about it and they said it's because each cluster is programmed to each truck, so it will act up.
