TruTrac LSD Problem

Well I change the oil today and decided to do the front and rear differential oil, when it was time to do the rear I pulled the differential cover off to check out the TruTrac. The bolts on the TruTrac were backing out, all 6 on each side, yes all 12 bolts. Also, there was a scar from the E-locker Differential lock position switch.

There was NO early warning of this I spoke with PAPA_D two weeks ago and he said he had this problem so that was the only reason I pulled the cover off other wise I would have just changed the oil. I would highly recommend that everyone do the same.
IIRC, regular checking/tightening of these bolts is considered the 'norm' on the TruTrac's, correct?
mine went out the same, but I had only one pull out, but it was enough to break. I had roughly 10,000. miles on the true trac before it happend. now i have a whole new rear end. I am sure it was due to installation possibly not locked tited before install, however your case twelve bolts backed out. that is not good.
Holy Mother Efer. Time to open up the rear-end....I can't afford another TT right now by any means....I'm probably going to try this weekend....What RTV silicone were we getting for inside/around the diff cover? Was it the high temp RTV? Also, I didn't install my Tru-Trac, what size are these bolts that are backing out and are they accessible with common hand tools? I need to check on this thing...appreciate the post Thrust

I remember that thread. I did check right after that when the Mag-Hytec cover went on and all was good but now this thread have me thinking I need to take the cover off again to see.
hmm, if its just the bolts backing out, there are some simple fixes around that? unless im completely missing what you guys are talking about. i know if it goes untreated it will destroy itself. but some high heat locktight? something.

Right Stuff is what is on mine, you can get it at any parts store: Permatex Gasket Makers and Gasket Remover - Industrial Supply Group

Part 1
The Problem
.
I went to Eaton website at Detroit Truetrac Differentials and downloaded the pdf file for the True Trac at http://www.eaton.com/ecm/groups/public/@pub/@eaton/@per/documents/content/ct_128482.pdf To get whatever info I could. The phone number listed in the pdf file was NO GOOD (GENERAL INFORMATION AND RECOMMENDATIONS To Contact Tractech Telephone: (586) 759-3850) so I called the Corporate Headquarters at (216) 523-5000 and (800) 386-1911 and they gave me (800) 328-3850 press 3 then press 2 and leave a message. I have called this number since yesterday to see if anyone will answer, NOPE. After calling 30 times BTW I did leave a message and still waiting. Today I called the Corporate Headquarters again and obtained these numbers 248 266-6200, 248 266-6449 and Brent at 248 226-6762 (this is starting to piss me off).
.
Well I finally spoke with Brent as an uneducated consumer informing him of the situation. He was very happy to inform me, that he never heard of this before and that they use a $15,000 torque machine to assemble the True Trac before shipping. My problem sounded like it maybe due to an installation issue into a used rear but when I informed him that it was replaced by Nissan after the old rear failed. He though that there was a possibly that the preload was incorrect. (OMG not there problem right!) OK now what are my options? He ask how old is the True Trac and I lied and said that it was a Christmas present so that would make it under a year old. Well, I would need to send the unit back to the place of purchase; they will send it to Eaton to determine “IF” it would be covered under the “Warranty”. Thank God this was not my intention because it would have taken a couple of weeks before I would have the Titan running again. What I really needed was the torque spec and Brent was very helpful with that. The torque spec are 50-55 ft lbs. Thank you Brent.
.
This is not a good place to be for some of you, if this problem develops.

Part 2
The fix
.
1)Remove the True Trac from the rear.
2)Remove the bearings from the True Trac and throw the bearing and races into the trash. Yes, you will need two new sets.
3)Remove the six bolts and clean everything thoroughly and if you remove any of the gears they must be reinstalled in the same place and in the same direction they came out. This is highly recommended because of the way the parts have been warn in. Use Loctite Threadlocker 277 or better on all bolt threads and install them finger tight then in a star pattern torque to 20-25 ft lbs the first time, then in a star pattern again to the final torque at 50-55 ft lbs.
4) Turn the True Trac upside down
5) Repeat step “3”
6) Install NEW bearings
7) Install the True Trac back into the rear
8) P.S. USE ONLY DINO 75W-140 Gear Oil and don’t use any stabilizer
.
I wrote this to help anyone in need, I was unable to find any “how to rebuild a True Trac” info so this is my best guess. Use at your own risk.

Man there is no way I know how to do that LOL..Sounds easy, but I had Papa_D's neighbor install mine, so I don't know how to put it back in...This sucks....Hopefully mine haven't backed out
1)Remove the True Trac from the rear.

Does this require backing off the bearing adjusters?

6) Install NEW bearings

Does this require a press?

7) Install the True Trac back into the rear

Does this require using a dial indicator to adjust the lash? (Or maybe you don't have to because you don't have to move the bearing adjusters to get it out?)

Papa_D's neighbor didn't use lock-tite on our's either! Hopefully there's not a problem.

Ain't that some BS!!! The same guy mysteriously didn't remember Papa_D calling about the same problem. I can't stand lair's!!! Especially when money is involved...What is it w/ people these day's???

LMAO!!! Nice pic Thrust! He get's the BS award. Someone should call him out...:)
It sucks when their is only one company who makes a certain part for a vehicle, especially something like a TT...They can jerk us around and lie, but what can we do? We can get all pissed at it, but we have no where else to go for this part....Its almost like we have to take their BS....Thrust I got your PM I will give you a call tomorrow....Maybe one day I can drive out to where you are and you can mod my extra stock thermostat, show me the best way for your intercooler, and help me with my TT (I'll pay you if you want)...Probably wait till I get my PGM though, unfortunately I have about 20K miles on my TT, so it may be getting bad

LOL, if i am not mistaken I had talked to him almost 2 months ago, and had at least of 1/2 hour discussion with him. "never heard of the happening with the locker" that i would have to send the locker back to place i bought it from, blah blah, then they would send it back to eaton for inspection to see what caused the failure. blah blah, " make sure the installer used lock tite, blah blah. I was floored that they make it not worth your time to get a new tt especially after inspection done by a local shop saying that the bolt (s) backed out of the locker and is obvious that the truetrac failed. what horse crap! finally after seeing that i was getting nowhere i just said f__c__it! another company not backing up their product!!!!! So i am out a locker that lasted about 12,000 mi..........I effin hate eaton's so called warranty gaurentee or I should say " sorry bud but we never heard of that happening, so this is what you need to do, but let me tell you that it will probably not get warrantied but if you want to try your more than welcome to ship it back at your cost " what a joke!
