I found this as well yesterday. A lot of gunk buildup on the back side of the rotor. Only on one side though. Figures, my warranty just ran out as well. So can someone identify this problem? Thx

Differential oil smells terrible... Hence the nickname skunk oil. It kinda smells like moldy cheese and skunk cabbage. Pretty foul. Hope you get it figured out bud! *goes to check wheels for oil*

I was quoted 2.5 hr of labor for the single side job at an off road shop... I showed him BAC's DIY thread and he said it was not a problem and would charge only real labor time if I brought him the necessary parts... so if you take an average $80/hr rate, $200 is a good price for not having to bust your own knuckles... But I like to wrench on my own stuff so I'll prob do my own later on... My original leak was small, slight drips but I high pressure washed it after finding it and it has since stopped, just have the oil residue on the inside hub and have been checking it to make sure it hasn't started to leak again...

Yea rite now its just drippin and my mechanic said prob 350$ a side thats including parts and labor. Parts aline add up to 215 per side. I think so thats not. Too bad. But i guess it pays to do both at same time rite? I gots side swiped a couple month back. But not too much damage just fender and bumper. Same side rear. Wonder if that has cause this side to leak? ?

Just make sure your vent on the diff is clear and functional, or better yet do the axle vent mod.

I had to replace an axle seal a few months ago and I took it all apart myself and then just took the axle to a shop and had em press on/off the bearing and spacer, they only charged me 20 bucks and I had in back together in an hour. Only cost me about 100 bucks to do it all that way.

when mine blew, before i took it to the dealer i wanted to get a quote from an offroad shop and they said $250-$300 for one side. don't forget to check your axle vent and you might as well do the mod. it only takes 15 mins and cost about $15. it'll help your axle breathe better so it's not forced to breathe through your seals lol

BIGSTUFF - Let us know what the dealer charges for this repair. I need it as well but am waiting on a price from a smaller shop I am familiar with. My local dealer likes to push the "since we haven't done any service to your truck, it all needs to be done" crap.

as well as most dealers will be going by the last TBS, that tells them to pull the entire shaft assy and replace it, which is a 500+ part itself, not including the 2.5 hr labor charge (realistic wrenching time of 1 hr that way)...
