*Not trying to beat a dead horse, just doing as much homework as I can. I tow a travel trailer and live in CO so lots of mountain towing and the truck will be my daily driver. I drive a 2012 Titan Pro4x daily now (It's my 2nd Titan).

Is there a "best" or "ideal" XD year and/or model, certain limited options or specs that YOU find the best? Is there a year, model or certain options you'd stay away from?

I am highly likely to be talking the plunge on a used 2nd gen and am open to the XD and even the diesel but I know nothing about them outside the obvious. I find this is a great way to learn some of the intricacies of the 2nd gen and specifically the XD..

I have no real criteria or requirements other then I'll be getting a 4WD.

Thanks!
Mark

I upgraded my 2010 Titan Pro-4X to a 2018 Titan XD with the Cummings Diesel last year and couldn't be happier with it. I tow a toy hauler fully loaded probably in excess of 10k pounds and I drive up mountain roads in Northern Arizona at 60+ MPH with no issues whatsoever. I have heard of people having issues with the turbo, but haven't experienced any issues myself in the ~45k miles I have put on it. For towing, I don't think I would go back to anything different.

Thanks for the info. I extremely intrigued by the Cummins and towing capability of the Diesel XD. I do wonder if I'll get tired of the size of the truck as my daily driver. I have always driven 1/2 short bed trucks with the exception of an F-250 crew cab long bed. After about 2 years I did get a little tired of the size.

I had a ‘16 f150 crew cab with 6,5” bed. The XD is literally with an inch or two in almost every dimension as that truck. So even though people compare it to the big three HD trucks, it’s not nearly that big in size or capabilities. It definitely has a place if your towing within its capability as it tows much nicer than a true half ton.

The diesel was intriguing to me too, but I ended up going with the gas motor. Now, it seems the diesel is turning out to have some pretty major issues (do a you tube search) and they have discontinued it. And folks are already having a hard time getting some repair parts. Do yourself a favor and stick with the gasser.

i know my local dealer said they had done 4 or 5 engine swaps on xd cummins motors for broken cranks when we were talking about the engines last december. i asked specifically how many motor swaps they had done on the titan and they said zero on the gas engines (mine was their first) but the 4 or 5 diesel swaps.

Gas, 20-21 if you can, but definitely stay away from the diesel. I tell everyone that

Go look at the VK56 "engine knock" Thread. Long blocks are being replaced like crazy. The Engine Knock Thread

I know about that thread. I had read a bunch of it but it makes you start hearing things and suddenly you think everything in the world is wrong with your truck.

Oh I have those same feelings. First reading that thread, I had my head in the LH wheel well for 30 mins. And then when buying the Cummins, the forum made it sound like it was going to grenade driving off the lot.

The advice i got from Nissan service specialist, you need to work the cummins XD very hard everyday. Otherwise it gums up. People had success after deleting emissions. But i didnt want to modify and sold my 17 diesel XD. Got 2021 XD and am very happy. The 9 speed transmission and interior upgrades are worth it. Having said that 2019 gas XDs are also good if you want to reduce the price (although these days everything is SO expensive). I heard that some, but not all, 2017-2018 might have engine knock but that’s only through forums.
