Is this the ABS system having some sort of failure? It's extremely rare (maybe happened 15 times over the past 2 years, which is ~15k miles). There are no lights at the same time on the dash (no slip, no abs, etc). The brakes work just fine from what I can tell (no loss of stopping power), but I haven't had the opportunity to really jam on them when this is happening.

Generally power cycling the car fixes the problem, which makes me thing this is some sort of faulty sensor somewhere. This is a very early build 2004 SE with big tow and the ~2006 factory brake upgrade/recall. ~100k easy miles total on the car.

Ideas?

Thanks!

Previous owner probably put in a bagpipe brake kit. :hahano:

But seriously, I've never experienced that before. It sounds similar to ABS kicking in but a little more...I don't know, high pitched to me. I agree with you though in that it doesn't really sound mechanical, more like a system or sensor.

Since I'm also the previous owner I have a good way to ask if that's a McGruber(tm) Bagpipes PedalReleaseCatter(r) or not... (checks alter ego)... nope!

I'm one of those people who takes all my vehicles out on slick parking lots/roads to check their limits when I first get them. This is very similar to the ABS but it's odd that this kicks in the opposite pedal position (mostly on _release_ ), which is definitely not how the ABS works. It is also a little hard to isolate true ABS tests because there's a lot of other noise going on, however, I tend to agree with you that this is _probably_ louder than the normal situation.

Woah! I had no idea this was a known issue!! I'm bummed because this definitely started happening within the claim period, but I've never received any notices or heard about it until now, and from what I read I'm probably on my own to get this repaired now.

Thanks for search tip. I'll take it a step further as I really appreciate when forums like this are complete in their entirety (in case external pages go away, in case Google searches don't work anymore, etc), so here are the salient links I uncovered:

Unfortunately my local shop couldn't find anything wrong with my systems (unfortunate because I'm sure their is a problem, it's just intermittent).

Dealership said they'd charge $130 to inspect the vehicle and the person I spoke with was nice enough to admit, "yeah it's going to be just like any other shop; we're going to spend 10 minutes and if we can't reproduce the symptoms, we're done."

I then called Nissan USA Consumer Affairs and they said they can't help me until a Nissan dealership has acknowledged the problem and failed to fix it, "preferably 3 - 5 times."

So now I'm in a weird spot - nobody can find the problem, I'm pretty sure this is a serious problem, but I stick needing to potentially just throw away at least $130 and a day without my truck, up to $650 just to prove it's broken ...

Any ideas out there for what I can do next?
