I've always had a bunch of crap to haul around, which has restricted me to a certain class of vehicle (truck/SUV/van). If I didn't have that as a concern, I'm kind of partial to the Subaru Legacy GT, the Dodge Charger, the new Wrangler Unlimited, and, believe it or not, the Honda Element.
I'm too rough on my vehicles to want something nice that I'd be afraid to use, so while I like the Lexus (Lexi?) and Infinities and Cadillacs and what-not, I don't think they are really the best cars for me. I also have no need for a contemporary sports car, because I have a 1965 Pontiac Tempest.
There are two cars that are completely impractical for me, yet I none-the-less lust after, although both are outside of the 40k price range: the BMW 5-Series and that Cadillac convertible that's built off the Corvette frame. One day, there will be no kids and no stuff to haul. Then I will have a really cool car. I'll also be 90.
