Is there a difference in the effectiveness of the types of wheel weights?

I recently replaced the stock crap-year tires and when they mounted/balanced the new tires, I noticed that they used the type of weight that is stuck to the inside of the wheel. I can visibly see the wheel weights between/behind the wheel spokes....

I thought that my wheels were previously balanced with the wheel weight that is crimped on the inside edge (backside) of the rim....(of course, I could be wrong.....)

Is there a difference?

The factory balances uses the stick on weights in the center now too, that's how my '11 is. There is a difference in that placing the weights in the center negates the need to have weights front and back side to equalize side to side balance.
