Hi,
I haven't posted in a long time.
But here is my situation.
I was driving on the freeway and all of a sudden, I see white smoke coming from tail pipe. After a few minutes, I saw the RPM go to 5. I pulled over to the shoulder and saw that under the truck was all wet and looked like oil. The fluid looked like it came from the front of the truck somewhere.
Not sure if this is related but, a week prior, I had the camshaft sensor, valve cover gaskets, PCV valve and breather hoses replaced.
I figured out what was wrong. One of the transmission cooler lines has a rip/hole. I probably ran something over? I will replace hose and refill lost tranny fluid.
You don't even have to run it dry. Had that happen to mine at 52k. Ran out about 5qts out of 12. Tranny ran fine after refill for about a month and then crapped out. I was lucky - Nissan replaced it with a reman under warranty. Hope your situation doesn't require a new tranny.
It never leaked. It lost 5th and then 4th gear in rapid succession. My guess is the valve body was damaged by the low fluid. Took about a month after I got the truck back from the dealership (they took it in, checked it out, refilled it, and it ran fine, so they returned it to me) for the failure to occur. The dealership actually said it might fail but their standard practice was to refill it, see if it worked, and if so, drive it as normal. If it was going to fail, it would generally fail pretty quickly. They did tell me they advised doing a trans fluid exchange in about 5k miles after the refill, just to let the fluid collect any burned material and then get it swapped out. Since mine lasted all of about 2k miles (I drove a lot back then) I didn't have to do that fluid exchange.
The low fluid happened when the trans cooler line burst, just like yours. Heres what happened to mine, in order:
Trans cooler line burst while driving
Trans started slipping while driving (same trip)
Stopped truck ASAP and shut off
Truck towed to dealership
Dealership says 5qts low based on amount it took to top off
Truck drove fine, so dealer sent me home with it
Drove truck for about a month
Trans crapped out (solenoids failed in VB, TCM threw codes, truck ceased to move forward)
Truck towed to dealership
Dealer went through process to warranty
Work delayed for 2mo while waiting for an available remanned tranny
Dealer installed remanned tranny
Truck drives fine for next 73k miles, bringing us up to today
So I think what you're asking is "How soon when the trans line blew dud I notice the trans was having an issue?" And what happened to me was an odd set of coincidences. It was lightly raining, and I took my daughter to school. Leaving the school, felt what I thought was wheelspin (motor revved, no movement of the truck, momentarily). I now know it was the beginning of my tranny having issues with fluid loss. So I drive about 2mi down the road, halfway home, in 45mph traffic. Then it starts slipping again. I look at the trans temp gauge, nothing abnormal, but it's slipping so I get up to a place I can pull over, about 100yds further, and ease off, and shut down the truck. As I'm shutting it down, I see the trans temp gauge climb fast, but I shut it down, so that was all I could do. The rest of the story played out as above.

Interesting. Mine, I saw white smoke. I looked at all my guages and they looked fine. I did slow down from 70mph to about 60 mph while getting to the shoulder. On my way to the shoulder, the RPM went to 5 and I wen to the shoulder and stopped the car while engine was running. Then decided to turn off engine. It was about 2-3 min from when I saw smoke to RPM going to 5 and me pulling over.
