Howdy everyone,
I am new to the forum here. My 2004 Dodge Ram was totaled and I have to replace it. The only new truck I can afford that meets my needs is the 2017 Crew Cab Titan. I went and test drove it and I have read about it and it seems really nice. With the discounts they are giving (over $10K in my case for a basic SV non-HD) it means I can about afford it.

But, when something seems too good to be true, it usually is. I went and did research and it seems maybe the discounts are due to the very low resale value?

I don't know whats going on here for sure, so I thought that I'd ask the experts... you guys! I'd like to hear your thoughts on why Nissan is offering such discounts on new trucks.

Thanks in advance for your help. If I end up buying a Nissan Titan I can imagine I would like to become an active member of your site!

Couple of reasons:

1. End of year - everyone discounts now.
2. High MSRP = more room for discounting and still making money.
3. It's not a Ford, Chevy, Toyota or Dodge (in that order). Titan is still a bit player in the full size truck market.

That's really all there is to it. Everyone makes a good truck these days, so don't over think it. If it meets your needs it will be a good truck, almost guaranteed, just like any of the others as well.

I don't actually know but I speculate that 1) The new Titan does not seem to be selling well; not seeing them around very much at all ... my local dealer has had basically the same batch of about 15 Titans for many months now, 2) Nissan is following the same trend as all the other car brands by setting huge outrageous MSRPs and then giving huge "discounts" which result in what the price should realistically have been all along, and 3) end of model year discounts, maybe.

Re #2 , that super high MSRP thing might be similar to other tech type products where when the new one comes out the 'big spenders' buy at whatever the high price is, and then over time the price comes down lower and lower to normal people like me, and then maybe at the very end you might find a Titan here and there at a super good price. After all, eventually all 2017's will get sold, at some price.

My thoughts, anyway.

#1 might be more location-dependent. Here in Houston, talking with the salesman at my dealer after I bought my truck, he was commenting that they're selling a lot of the Titans, particularly the diesel XDs.

Unfortunately the key words are "salesman ... commenting".

Seems unlikely a salesman would admit they aren't selling well.

Nissan makes a very solid truck, I wouldn't overthink it.

Deep discounts are on most vehicles this time of year as the new model year is coming out.

I just bought the same Titan you are looking at and I had the same questions about why they can discount them so much. They seem to be a solid truck with a powerful engine under the hood.

They sure wanted to sell me the Platinum model but I did not want to pay that price. I did some digging and learned that Nissan is trying to become more of a player in the Full Size Truck market and to do this they are sacrificing the profits to get a share of the market and the end of the year is near. I would focus on more than the 10K discount on the SV crew cab gas model, they still have bargaining room to make a profit. I love to haggle and negotiate, and found that i was able to get just over 14K off MSRP out the door, including all taxes and fees with a maint package as part of the deal (Which i really did not want) but it was part of the deal, the dealer had to make a profit on it. I did walk out the door to my car twice during the process, but they did not want me leaving without making a deal. I have also purchased 2 new vehicles from this same dealer in the past 9 months, so that helped with the bargaining power.

There are not too many in stock at the dealers where i live and it appears they are trying to clear out the lots before the 18's arrive.

Because Titans are still & most likely will always be a Niche vehicle. Plus that makes the resale value sink faster than the Titanic.
They are good trucks for the money, though....

Big discounts are the order of the day for a lot of vehicles right now. Just replaced my wife's 2004 Expedition with a 2017 model. This is one of the most popular big SUVs on the market, from the best selling brand of truck/SUV out there. Ford was offering $8500 in rebates and I was able to buy the truck, tax, title, and a 100k mile warranty for about $13k below sticker. Tax represents nearly $2k of that figure.

Certainly resale is impacted by new selling prices, but in my experience, my dodge ram depreciated faster than any other vehicle I've ever owned. If you're going to buy new, you need to plan on keeping it a very long time, like you did your dodge. Then resale doesn't matter much.

They may or may not suck, but if discounting means they suck, that also means almost every other truck out there sucks, too, doesn't it? Even the "best selling" F150 has had deep discounts ($8-10k locally on certain trim levels). And this is truck country.

GM and RAM 2017 half tons are disconted 20% where I live.
Heck, the Dodge dealer was practically offering to give awaya a free house with every 2017 he could move off of his crammed lot.
That's off an inflated MRRP that hardly anyone pays.
Toyota has pretty deep discounts right now as well.
Probably Ford also (I didn't consider those in my recent purchase).
And all of the above worked out the same or cheaper than the Titan I wound up buying. I'm usually a sucker for 'cheap', but none of those impressed me as much as the Nissan, so here I am.

In short, it is NOT too good to be true. There may be some issues (transmission software, for instance), but it's a pretty great truck. One of a very few still made in the USA. Rare, compared to F/G/R trucks. Good looking outside with well executed interior and pretty amazing drive train. Drives better, and brakes better than any of the others I tested. Fuel economy isn't quite as horrid as I expected, but that's the one weakness (Tundra is worse).

You aren't walking into a minefield. Buy the darn thing and start enjoying it!

I just picked up my first Titan a couple of days ago...Pro4X...I was car shopping with my mom and the Titan caught my eye!! Honestly dont think I have ever seen the new body style and started purposefully looking for a 2nd gen on the road...Even on a couple hour trip, did not see one of these on the road...Started some internet research and read some of the reviews (some good, some mediocre) but still loved the truck and loved the fact that Nissan was putting up a 5 year, 100K warranty on their truck which none of the other trucks have. The salesman told me that this was the first time that Nissan had offered deep discounts like they currently are ..maybe because they aren't selling well...or just want to make room for the 18's. All I know was I was glad to get 12K off the sticker and pulled the trigger...not so much because of the discount...didn't hurt, but because I wanted something different and not see my truck 10 times on the road on a 5 mile trip...I traded my '13 F-150 Supercrew with Ecoboost that I loved! I also got a great trade in for it, which may or not be the case 4-5 years from now if and when I go to sell or trade my Titan, but right now, I am one happy camper with this truck and hope that it continues to serve my needs and finds more market appeal as I think it is as nice as any truck on the road...I am not brand loyal and have owned Chevy, GMC, Dodge, Ford, Toyota, and now my first Nissan! So far...no regrets!!

That was one of my main ideas for wanting a Titan, not every Tom, ****, and Harry have one. Since I got mine in July, I deliberately look out for them and I have only seen a few older ones. I've posted about this before but there are probably around 20 pick ups at my work; all Sierras, F150s, and Rams. Don't get me wrong, they are all nice, but it's super refreshing to walk out and have something different.
