I originally posted this in the XD Cummins thread but wanted to add it here for more info.
Hello to all XD both gasoline and Cummins owners. I would like as much input as possible both positive and negatives as to the overall performance and quality of the vehicle you may have. I am looking to purchase an XD and trying to decide between the gas/diesel. My understanding is that the XD is between the 1/2 and 3/4 ton and considered a 5/8 ton according to pick up standards in my research. I actually would like to hear more straight from the guys like me who use the Trucks that I want to purchase. Thank you in advance for your help and opinions. I am a Contractor and haul a Work box trailer and have 5-Wheel Camper weighing 7800lbs. (to give more insight for those who choose to give info)

I don't own one, but it will be my next truck.

Is Diesel Still the MPG King? 2016 Nissan Titan XD Gas vs. Diesel Towing MPG Review - The Fast Lane Truck

TFL has some decent stuff even if at times it seems they like to nitpick the Titan, but there is a direct comparison between the XD gas and diesel. Tough choice as to which way to go if you ask me. One minute I'm leaning Cummins, next gas.

But as for the truck, I'm pretty much sold as it is a tow vehicle that is also a really good daily driver from handling perspective. I've read a lot on how the Titan was designed and they were aiming for a very particular market with them and when those buyers catch on, it could take off. If anything, based on design and build, the towing numbers are probably under rated. The independent front suspension which is what makes them ride well is what limits payload. But the Titans rear axle is supposedly actually from a one ton truck. If you go with Cummins, while it is kind of a new engine, it also isn't as it's pretty much Cummins bus engine that has been used quite a bit. The question would come down to the transmission and what it can handle. The said Nissan wasn't interested and trying to really find the max as in a lot of states you have to have a CDL for towing over 10k, and they were not aiming for a commercial market as that crowd is far more likely to go with a dually anyways, so they said their number as is was plenty high enough.

Being the owner of an '08 Titan SE LWB 4X2 set up for towing a 8,000# enclosed trailer, I've also tested and written truck reviews on the new Titan XD with both the VK56VE and the Cummins V8. In a nutshell, I prefer the gas-powered Titan for it's comfort and response both on and off the pin. The updated VK is a strong performer with immediate throttle response and simply feels like what this first-gen Titan owners wants. The Cummins V8 has massive torque, but it takes longer to get it going, twin turbos or not when the truck is unladen. It actually feels better with a heavy load to haul.

But whether the engine is a diesel or gas, the XD platform is a must if you are constantly handling heavy loads. Despite having upgraded suspension, air springs, and other mods, the new XD felt better planted and more stable. Despite using an anti-sway and weight distributing hitch, the XD resisted cross winds, rain and uneven road surfaces better. Together with the integrated brake control and the other informational systems in the second gen Titan XD, makes for a more relaxed and confident ride across interstates. If I had to make a decision on a new truck, the Titan XD option would be at the top of my list.
