My alternate "factory" navigation solution

A couple of years ago I bought an oem nav bezel for my non-nav equipped Titan. I added a 7" vga touchscreen and a car pc setup. It took me countless hours to install and configure the software and worked half-assed for about a week before it broke. I never got around to fixing it, so I drove for over 3 years with a blank screen. Well, I finally got sick of it, so I ripped it out and started over.

I used this Magellan Roadmate 1700 ($242):

Amazon.com: Magellan RoadMate 1700 7-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator: Electronics

I siliconed it into the nav bezel, and spliced its cigarette lighter adapter into the back of the Titans lighter plug. If you were lazy, you could also just loop in through one of the knock outs next to the lighter and plug it directly in. I also ran a usb and a video cable down to the floor for laptop updates and a backup camera.

Pros:

  • It's relatively cheap and idiotproof.
  • It automatically powers on and off with the car ignition.
  • It looks factory.
  • Its user interface is much better than the factory nav system.
  • Reception is excellent, even mounted under the dash - no external antenna required.
  • Text to speech, so it reads the road names to you.
  • Sunlight readable screen.

Cons:

  • No adaptive volume control. You can adjust it on screen, but I just leave it at fixed level. The integrated speaker is loud and fairly clear, but with my music turned up loud, I can't hear the directions. There is no audio line out, so if you wanted it piped into the stereo, you'd need to disassemble the unit and tap into the speaker leads.
  • You can't turn it off while the vehicle is running. The power switch is on top of the unit and inaccessible when installed like this. The unit does automatically switch to night mode, so the screen glare isn't bad at night, but if it ever crashes or something, you'll need to pop the dash open to reset it.
Sorry, no pics of the finished installation. If I remember, I'll add some tomorrow.

I am in love with this mod, everything about it it. I am def going to do this, however I wonder if there is a way to get one that has bluetooth and wire the mic on the gps to a mic in the truck somehow. Also I think I will install a switch somewhere hidden just as a power cutoff. Amazing though one of those things that is relatively simple after you think of it, but it took someone to think of it! Great Job!

Here's one more. So far, this thing has been working great.

The actual routing isn't as good as my Garmin Nuvi, or Navigon on my iphone though. It favors interstates way too much. It's not bad, but its routes tend to be 2 or 3 minutes slower on average. Also, the draw distance doesn't extend to the top of the screen when you're on back roads. It will sometimes look like you're driving into a dead end, but as you get closer, the road extends.

There's an update out for it, so hopefully that will fix it.

Yeah, will the nav bezel work with the non RF stereo?

Yes, I used my original radio faceplate, but I had to cut the about 1" off the top of it. I clamped a straightedge to it and drug a razor blade across it about 100 times.
The RF and standard faceplates are the same. The nav radio faceplate is different and is tougher to make work, so don't buy that.

so she can be wired for reverse camera? I got the amazon screen up its on sale for 189 just wonderin how the reverse camera function works, i already got a camera from my old truck. Thanks

i think he's talking to the part that surrounds the actual radio, like with the volume control cutouts and since the nav system doesnt have an lcd screen for like radio station and whatnot, it would be harder to make fit. Might be wrong but that's what I got out of it

According to this Nav Install - Nissan Armada Forum: Armada & Infiniti QX56 Forums it looks like the only difference would be the two little round edges on the faceplate from what I can tell anyway......

EDIT: after looking I see that he probably cut this where the lcd goes, however I think i would rather cut that area out then having a raw edge up top where the bezel and faceplate meet just mpo

Goofus: Have you hooked up a reverse camera to it yet? Ive read that they might not be compatible but I have the 1700 and am going to install it soon as the morons from the online nissan parts place ship me my bezel.. Ordered it on christmas, you think it would be here by now, theyre only in jersey..

thanks

Yes, I actually have a problem with the video input. I didn't have a reverse camera, but planned to get one, so I tested it with the video out on my digital camera. Sitting on my desk, it worked great. As soon as I powered the camera on, GPS would switch to that image. After I installed it though, it didn't work. I got the image to flicker once, but that was about it. I figured I might have gotten a defective unit, but I didn't care that much about it and didn't feel like removing it to send back. Sounds like it might be a common problem on these though. That sucks.

I did see these for sale at Costco yesterday for $199 though.

jesus mine was 300 at bestbuy. i hope the reverse camera works thatd be a big plus to having it mounted in dash

look around at other units besides the roadmae 1700. I'm less than satisfied with mine

Here is how I did mine. I used your idea, but we built a bracket to mount it so it is mounted to the dash not the bezel..
