Big problems. Front Driveshaft?

I'm glad I didn't go offroading today.. Seems my lil 4WD problem is turning into a major problem!

I posted a thread about 4WD. How it's got a really loud metal sound, that gets faster as the truck rolls faster. Well Having my window down today, I noticed the same sound, but in 2WD. It's there, but not nearly as loud as in 4WD. I was out getting gas..so I drove straight home after that.

I assume it has something to do with the front end of the drivetrain..I could be wrong. Thoughts, suggestions?

I was thinking of dissconecting the front drive shaft and taking the drive shaft out. Yeah I wont have 4WD but this may make it one step closer to finding the problem. I shouldn't have any problems removing the shaft, right? Is it easy..just a few bolts? I'll also search right now too.

Thanks guys!

I've got a noise coming from the front of my truck. I crawled under there to find that the u-joint connecting the front driveshaft to the transfer case is loose. It makes a clunking sound each time the shaft rotates. I'm taking it in on Saturday to get it fixed.

So my question to you, is your front driveshaft loose anywhere?

I'm putting my dirty clothes on now..I'll go take a look and fool around and report back shortly.

You're right though, it sounds like a metal noise everytime a rotation is made.

I also searched the fourm and google if it is safe to remove the front drive shaft..nothing came up.

Okay so I crawled up under there, and sure enough, front drive shaft is loose. Right by the transfer case. Looks like four bolts on each end. So I'm going down to remove it now.

I also noticed a dark oil comming off the line, I assume goes to the brakes? The hose comes out right above the tranny/driveshaft connection area. And it goes down to a bolted down router. Of whcih two metal cables from that router go off to the back of the truck. And right at that router is the dark oil. I'll take a picture..but clearly it's not suppost to be there. Thing is, I dont know where it's comming from

Okay well the whole removing the driveshaft thing wasn't as bad as I had thought. And nothing pops out after the shaft is removed. I was affraid that if I took it off, something int he transfer case would come out and some kind of oil would come spilling out.

That was my noise though. Bad U-Joint. The seal around one of them is blown off. Simple fix. Just hope it doesn't snow anytime soon...

Yeah I'm glad too. The truck sounded like CRAP. Like everything just wanted to fall apart lol So I'm glad it was just a front drive shaft U-Joint. I just drove 50 miles without it in, and no problems! :D

While you're at it you might want to consider replacing the seals since the drive shaft is off.

The seals on the front of the transfer case. I believe there also a seal on the rear of the front differential too. The seal on the transfer case has been known to go bad.

Thank you for your video. For three years I've not driven my truck much because of the vibration. I also had the clicking when coming to a slow rolling stop. I just put new rims and tires on it as well as shocks and struts/coil overs. After I did all that I took the truck to the dealer with my Route 66 Extended Warranty and they put an entire new front propeller shaft in. Total cost was nearly $600.00, but my cost was only $97.33. The truck was like this when I bought it - I should have used the warranty immediately! Luckily I have 2 more years and 33K more miles before it expires! Time to start driving my "Feels like new" 2006 Titan a lot more!
