3rd Gear is not 1:1, but here is why we use it....
I believe our 4th gear is 1:1; or we would have to have a double overdrive transmission, we do not. 3rd gear is not 1:1, but we use it to avoid hitting the Speed Limiter while on a dyno. We can not do 4th on a dyno, unless the truck has been tuned and had the Speed Limiter increased. This simply became the accepted standard for Titans, years ago. OK, maybe 3 or 4 years ago.
OK, here is some info from "bestatchess", way back in 2005 in reference to the Titan and a 2004 F-150:
The rear axle ratio is higher (numerically lower) because the 1st gear of the five speed transmission is lower (numerically higher) than found in the competing 4 speeds.
To get the effective gearing, you have to multiple the transmission ratio x the transfer case ratio x the rear axle ratio.
For 1st gear, low range, for a 4 x 4 Big Tow or Off Road Titan, the calculation would be:
3.827 (1st gear) X 2.596 (low-range transfer case) x 3.357 (rear axle ratio) for a crawl ratio of : 33.35
For a 2004 F-150:
2.84 (1st gear) X 2.48 (low range transfer case) x 4.10 (rear axle ratio) for a crawl ratio of: 28.88
The F150 has a 4 speed:
1st 2.84:1
2nd 1.55:1
3rd 1.00:1
4th 0.70:1
Reverse 2.33:1
The Titan has a 5 speed:
1st 3.827
2nd 2.368
3rd 1.520
4th 1.000
5th 0.834
Reverse 2.613
