For a month or so my SES light has come on and off and recently when it has been sitting overnight in the garage I can smell a fumes in the morning. I did a self diagnosis and got the P0455 code. Did the general process of elimination... gas cap, etc and had decided the EVAP control valve was probably bad. Since the truck needed to go in for a recall I figured I would just have the dealership look it over... NIGHTMARE! Apparently they did a smoke test and located an issue above the fuel tank... $95 for the test, $515 to remove the tank, 1-1/2 days. Next I am told the fuel pump needs replacing and this still may not solve the problem...another $550, another 1-1/2 days and still no word! Correct me if I am wrong here, but isn't the fuel pump a closed and sealed system within the fuel tank? How could this be the source of a EVAP leak? How would a smoke test even lead them to this? Besides the SES light and the aroma of fuel fumes the truck was performing fine... no lag, fuel mileage seems normal, no drips or leaks. I don;t mind paying to have my truck serviced by the pros, but am I getting bent over here?

Did you give them permission to do all that?
Anytime you take it to the dealer, you run the risk (95%) of getting bent over!
Depending on the year, there is a recall on the sending unit, which means it might be a covered issue.

Thanks UnknownTitan,

Yeah, I made the mistake of allowing the tank to be removed as I figured while it was there getting other recalls repaired it would save me the headache, and to be honest really expected an EVAP canister, purge valve, etc.... didn't think the cost would keep escalating. Truck has 105,000 miles, 2005 Titan 4wd. Not really sure what to do at this point. Sadly, my father was a chief design engineer for 50 yrs. in the auto industry specific to fuel systems, wish he lived closer... he would be appalled!

P0455 is a evap purge valve leak. That is an extremely common problem with the Titan. Replace the evap purge valve and the problem will be solved, code will go away. Sounds like your dealer is definitely ripping you off. If your truck runs fine, then the fuel pump is fine.

P0455 is a "Gross Evap System Leak". It COULD be the purge valve. It will also throw that code for a loose gas cap and many other leaks.

Thanks everyone for all your help, picked up the truck today and feel better about the situation. Turns out the entire fuel tank insert assembly that holds the fuel pump, fuel gauge triggers, etc was badly corroded and was no longer sealing with the tank causing a gross EVAP leak. They also noticed that the fuel pump itself and the fuel gauge sensors were corroded, they replaced the entire unit. No real answer as to what might have caused this, possibly age or a gas station w/water contamination, who knows.... lets just hope non of the contaminants made it further into the system.

Tell me that they showed you the parts that came out.

I am pretty skeptical when it comes to this stuff as well and no voice of authority is going to shake me down for a grand+ especially since my dad has been designing fuel management systems for 50yrs, but I did see the old unit and it was badly corroded. Perhaps it was a good prop, but at the end of the day the truck is running, no SES light, no fumes, and although my wallet is lighter $1200.00 I tend to believe them..... the alternative is to be broke AND pissed off for the rest of the weekend. Lesson learned, going to find a local mechanic from now on or do it myself.

It was actually at 7 corners in Falls Church close to where I work. I purchased the truck new 6 yrs ago at Sheehy but didn't want to make the long trek to Manasses even though they have been great from the beginning.

I don't even need to read the thread. The answer is "yes" but needs to be done to keep their wheels turning.

I not sure what is wrong with your Titan but highly suggest finding a really good local ma & pa type of place. I went to a Nissan dealership recently for the 2 recalls. I was told that I had transmission leak, which it did.Cost was going to be $600 total for parts and labor. Not surprised, I replied " not interested " my guy charged me $9 dollar lunch to replace all my clamps. I'll never go to the dealership to get service
