Damage occurs when you use a sponge (doesn't wisk away the dirt from the paint like sheepskin), washing over dry areas (no lubrication for grit to float away on) and no wax (protective layer between grit and paint).
Ha. Mine has chips on the hood and doors. It could use a good touch up paint job but I'm not sure I want to pay for it.Sigh, where are all these people? I need people that are just as fanatic about washing their vehicles as me!

Yeah, those automated washes really tear up the clear coats. I have only taken my 5 year old car into the car wash about 2-3 times when I tore my Achilles and couldn't hand wash it. After that, I noticed a few spider scratches that I hadn't seen before. Those things are great for whipping the dirt off, but also mark up today's "sensitive" paint jobs. It almost makes me want to get the vehicles wrapped.I was until the clear coat rolled off like a window shade. Damn Red Alert.
Plus, a lot of the new bunch have their vehicle washed. 🙄
