I have a 2005 cc off road 7350 miles on it -Change my front diff fluid today drain plug had about 1/4-1/2 inch thick shavings on it put in Royal Purple 75w90 then went to rearend diff drain plug had a good 1/2 inch of shavings on it refilled with Royal Purple 75w140, is that normal amount of shavings for first change ? also changed motor oil to Royal Purple 5w30 and put the 2 inch PRG leveling kit on looks great ! i'm planning on changing rear diff fluid just to see how much shavings there is, and transmission fluid at 15000 miles what do you guys think of Royal Purple Products ? and what do you recommened on Transmission FLUID ?
BTW while truck was on lift we was cheching everything out and noticed the right rear fender has a damping mat glued to inside of fender and GUESS WHAT mine has fallen almost off left side was fine i think (BY THE WAY IT LOOKS) it was like that from the factory ! who would have thunk it :jester: lol

Thanks, Rodney

Wow... how soon should you change the diff fluid...

I don't like the idea of a chewing gum sized amount of metal chilling in my diffs fluid (well atached to the magnet but you get the idea)

It's so dang easy and cheap that I'd do it with the 1st oil change. That wad can't hurt anything and is simply a collection of shavings from the manufacturing process. Anything larger than a "shaving" though would concern me.

I don't think Royal Purple would be any better than say Mobil-1 fully synthetic gear oil. It's mostly marketing hype if you ask me.

1/2" worth of crud on the drain bolt? Yikes! You waited too long. I changed the rear diff fluid on mine at around 3K miles and only had a slight film on my plug. The fluid was dark and was slightly metallic looking, but no shavings or anything like that.

We need to change thr rear diff. fluid at 3K?....

There are many of us on this forum(me included), that think it is wise to change the engine oil and 1000 miles and the diff. no later than 5000 miles.
I also changed the front diff., transfer case and the transmission all under 5000 miles. I believe that it is prudent to get out all of the filings, etc. that that are left over from the manufacturing process.

I drained my '05 diff. at a little over 1k. It was dark and had shavings. I refilled with R-P 75/140. So far so good. Royal Purple has been proven to be outstanding products. They don't sponser any race cars. Nor do they have any big deals with any manufacturers for factory fill. They just make good lubes.

I agree. Your rear diff fluid will actually be gray. I found all of mine underfilled also. Or at least not filled to the drain plug. I suspect the factory adds the exact amount of fluid called for rather than filling to the plug.

Changing the oil won't do anything for the metal shavings, all the shavings are stuck to the magnetic drain plug. Changing the fluid will only help remove the non magnetic particles in the fluid. I do think it is a good idea to change the fluid early, but the metal particles will not be going through the gears they will stay on the plug.

what fluid do you recommend for the transfer case and how much ? and what kind are you guys putting in the transmission ?

Thanks, Rodney
I used Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF in the transfer case. Nissan reccomends Nissan Matic D but you can use any Dexron III or Mercon ATF per your users manual. You will have to use Nissan Matic J in the transmission. The user manual indicates using something else may void the warranty. There is a warning under your hood that states this also. I don't think Nissan has approved any other ATF fluid for the transmission. If I am wrong someone please correct me.

All those products are good for the diff's and transfer case. But, be careful on the transmission. The warranty is VERY specific on that fluid. If the after market fluid doesn't match the Nissan transmission fluid EXACTLY your warranty will be voided on the transmission.

I changed mine and was going to go the synthetic route but, my dealer stated all the other fluids are O.K. for after market but, not the transmission. I know that most automotive dealers would state something like that but, I haven't had one that was that addimate about this. I went ahead and bought the Nissan transmission fluid, about $10 a quart:eek:. I didn't feel comfortable using after market when they were so concerned about voiding my warranty.

Good luck!!!
Jim
