All,
I decided to add some blinkers to my mirrors so that people could see a blinker when they're driving next to my trailer. You have to be really far up the trailer before you see the truck blinker, so I decided to do something about it.

I found some amber marker lights at Advance Auto that I liked ok, so I decided to put them on. I mounted them halfway up the mirror, vertically, because I thought they looked best that way. You can get them in LED, but I think the incandescent ones are a bit brighter.

It was easy overall. The first mirror was difficult because I had to figure everything out, but the second one went pretty quickly.

Here are the basic steps.
1. Remove mirror from truck. You have to remove the door panel to unclip the control wire harness for the power mirrors. You don't have to disassemble the mirror itself in any way.
2. Run the wires through the bottom arm. It's easier. Just fish them through from the mount side to the mirrors. Mount the light on the side of the mirror and connect the wires. These lights are designed to ground itself when you screw into the chassis to mount it. Since you're mounting on plastic, you have to run a ground wire to it. I wrapped the ground wire around the grounding screw and tightened it down well.
3. Run the wires down the door panel behind the window and out the rubber grommet where the wires enter the door inside the door crease. Run the wires up through the front quarter panel and tap into the front blinkers. I had these adhesive clamps for wires that keep the wires tight against the body and out of the way of the door.
4. Solder and heat shrink all connections.
5. Test them.
6. Put the truck back together.

That's it. Hope this helps someone.

nice. There are also two wires above the gas pedal where you can tap into the blinkers. i was shown this by another member for a blinker project I did.

Looks good man, that will be far more visible. Now if you could install something that will make the other drivers pay attention, you'll be golden

Not digging it to be honest. Isn't this why your trailer is supposed to have the blinkers?

You don't have lights on the trailer??? It's like $30 for a decent kit! Just do it!

Never mind the naysayers
I don't. I view the forum as posting to help people solve problems. If someone doesn't like it or doesn't want it, they're not required to do it. I'm certainly not needing validation from anyone on a forum.

I'm at a point in my life (43) where safety is priority one. Nissan should put blinkers on the Big Tow mirrors, period. People that tow big trailers need them. Maybe my post will help someone out who needs them like me. Maybe not.

The trailer has blinkers, but only in the back. If a car is past it, they won't see it. And they can't see the truck blinker. I was going to add the marker lights to my trailer and tap into the blinker lights, but there were two reasons I didn't want to do it. First, the lights would be fairly low along the skirt, so I didn't know how well anyone would see them when they were right next to the trailer. Secondly, the trailer wires (yellow/green) control both the blinkers and the brake lights, so tapping in to them would work, but they would also come on with the brakes. I didn't want to risk a ticket for it. You can get a module to separate the functions supposedly, but the low position on the lights made me opt not to do it that way.

Too bulky IMO but clean job

I agree. I wanted something slimmer, but it's a trade off if you want to be able to signal someone coming up behind you. If I can find some with a smaller profile that will work, I'll probably change them out.

I wonder how you can wire them up to be running lights as well....

It's different. Clean install.

Actually, now that I think about it this would be a nice mod for those azz whole bikers who like to cut people off really close. Of course, not all bikers fall under this category; however, their is a large group in California that does.

Thanks for the write up, been wanting to do this (or something similar-ie on the fender) for a while now.

Have you had a chance to use them at night yet? I'm curious if the placement messes with your vision (or not). Doesn't look as though it would from what I can tell in the pics.

Some of the factory ones (Ford/Toyota etc) would screw with my vision while looking in the mirror I think.

Camelfter,
I haven't driven it at night yet, but I don't think they will. I can't see them from the seat, and that was the main reason for mounting them a little forward on the housing. Night vision is also why I didn't try to mount LEDs inside the housing or on the mirror itself.

Plus, mounting it a little forward keeps you from seeing the mounting screws and wires since they'll be behind the mirrors.

Here's another shot. It shows that it's not a bulky looking as in the closeup shot in the first post. But, I'm going to keep my eyes open for something that may look better.

I finally found some aftermarket LEDs that looked like they would be decent, so I ordered them. They're these:

Amazon.com : Amjimshop(TM) Universal Car 2x Amber SMD 13led 12v Rearview Side Mirror Turn Signal Lights : Car Electronics

They're good and bright, but I don't know how long they'll last. I like them more than the repeaters I had on there, but either way, I think the idea is pretty solid. I noticed the last time I pulled the trailer that people gave me more leeway with changing lanes. I think it's because they can see a blinker now.

Here's what they look like after the install.

A lot of the newer trucks (cars too) have blinkers on the mirrors - so it must add to safety, you know the OEMs wouldn't do it for no reason. I think it looks great, nice job!

If any of you jokers see me driving around, just remember that I came up with this before they released the pics of the 2016. So don't say I'm trying to copy it
