All,
I decided to add some blinkers to my mirrors so that people could see a blinker when they're driving next to my trailer. You have to be really far up the trailer before you see the truck blinker, so I decided to do something about it.
I found some amber marker lights at Advance Auto that I liked ok, so I decided to put them on. I mounted them halfway up the mirror, vertically, because I thought they looked best that way. You can get them in LED, but I think the incandescent ones are a bit brighter.
It was easy overall. The first mirror was difficult because I had to figure everything out, but the second one went pretty quickly.
Here are the basic steps.
1. Remove mirror from truck. You have to remove the door panel to unclip the control wire harness for the power mirrors. You don't have to disassemble the mirror itself in any way.
2. Run the wires through the bottom arm. It's easier. Just fish them through from the mount side to the mirrors. Mount the light on the side of the mirror and connect the wires. These lights are designed to ground itself when you screw into the chassis to mount it. Since you're mounting on plastic, you have to run a ground wire to it. I wrapped the ground wire around the grounding screw and tightened it down well.
3. Run the wires down the door panel behind the window and out the rubber grommet where the wires enter the door inside the door crease. Run the wires up through the front quarter panel and tap into the front blinkers. I had these adhesive clamps for wires that keep the wires tight against the body and out of the way of the door.
4. Solder and heat shrink all connections.
5. Test them.
6. Put the truck back together.
That's it. Hope this helps someone.
