The older my Titan got, the more it seemed to heat up when towing. When I first got it I pulled a dual axle enclosed utility trailer that weighed around 6K in the mountains without any issues. A few years later, that same trailer would heat up the transmission quite a lot. I did two full fluid exchanges on the transmission and the fluid looked OK each time.

If you're towing on the flats it won't be too bad, but certainly not fun. Add hills into the journey and you could be in trouble. The extra transmission cooler is going to help. The radiator bypass will help. But that radiator bypass in cold climates may not be good for the transmission. Mine wasn't bypassed but it was routed wrong so in the winter my transmission gauge wouldn't come off the very bottom mark. Transmission fluid works best at temperature and the Titan transmission doesn't have a thermostat in it to allow the fluid to come up to temp.

The only time you'll complain about having too much truck is at the fuel pump.
Long has a thermal bypass which solves this problem.

Since Indiana does get some winter weather and cold temps, I want this route when I bypassed mine. Have had no temperature issues regardless of season.

Is it really only about the gearing? And if so, why? This truck is a beast since I did the cajun setup w/ uprev...
Thanks, as I am trying to wrap my head around this all.
If I do a tranny cooler and guage, this will keep me running cooler and monitored.
Also I am figuring to take a southern route to avoid the high mountains.

Doc, If your trailer really does weigh 3k, and I don't doubt you, you're going to be well over weight. It's not about whether the T can do the work once. It's about the rating, which is two issues: wear/abuse of the truck, and legal liability.

As for whether it's just the gearing, consider that the 3.36 gears are 15% lower than the 2.94s. And that's before you multiply out the torque loading with the transmission gearing. Multiplying by a 15% larger number gives exponentially more power to the wheel in the lower gears (where it really matters in towing, aside from brakes).

An update;
Except for a failing fuel pump, the truck pulled great from Long Island NY to Phoenix Az. without issue.
Total weight of trailer was 10k lbs. I used an anti sway/ load leveling hitch which made life much easier. If I had to do it again I would definitely install rear air bag helpers as the rear springs sagged a heap. Anyway, thanks to all who replied with thoughts and recommendations. This is a great group with lots of wisdom.
