Hey guys, so I decided to save thousands and rebuild my rear differential on my 04 king cab 4x4. Question is, will I need any special tool or tools to do this job and should I take the rear end off the truck to do it? Thanks

Not a simple job. Dial indicators needed to set the backlash, and various inch pound and foot pound torqe wrenches to set preloads.

yes thats what i did on my 06 titan brought everything to trans and diff shop for rebuild saved a lot of money
added liquid moly diff additive and put another 128,000 trouble free miles on my diff

Good call. I'll do almost any mechanical work on my truck, but a diff rebuild is not for me. There is entirely too much learned skill in that work.

For the vent mod, you can search the forum and find a good set of instructions and part numbers to order and do it right, or you can order the kit from any of several retailers supporting the forum. Time or money is the question. It's not expensive either way - about $25 if you source the parts, and about $45 if you order the kit. Install will take 20min. 30 if you're slow and careful.

Well come to find out the vent mod has been done looks like a while back but I'm not pleased with the way it looks so I'm re-doing it. They only used 1/4 inch hose and it just doesn't seem sufficient to me. I'm uping it to 5/16 like it says on utube. Plus there's like 2 90 degree bends in the line. Not good in my book. Thanks for your advice.

Use a hose section long enough to allow for a coiled half-loop from where you zip-tie to the frame to the axle. Leave enough slack for suspension articulation, but not so much it gets in the way or tangled.

No I'm pretty sure I got it in time. I'm still driving it, gingerly. Aamco Transmissions is going to hook me up $1500 or less since I'm a disabled veteran. Hoorah!. I'm hopeful my replacement vent mod will get me around town a couple weeks

Bought it this way. Haven't even cleaned it. Am I ok to pressure wash it?
