Regular vs Premium

Hi guys,
I just purchased my first Nissan (2023 Pro 4X). So far I am enjoying the truck! I am finding some conflicting information about if it's OK to use regular unleaded or not.
I found some really old info here after quick search. Do we have to use Premium to keep the engine happy for long time or is it just matter of loosing HP when using regular unleaded?

I'll chime in,we use good old regular, albeit Canadian gas..not sure the difference, but if you like the good stuff more power too you,just can't see an actual boost in hp at the foot,17pro4x.

Premium is more expensive (obviously) and this is my daily driver. I would rather use regular if there is no other side effect besides loosing some power. If if has some other consequences I will use Premium . I am not engine savvy so I figured I would ask here. I had my Tundra for 17 years and hoping to keep this truck for at least as long.

ZERO harm in using Regular unleaded in the Titan. You will achieve maximum power and performance from using premium fuel. 390HP with regular unleaded vs 400HP with premium. I can not tell any difference in using either. I usually fill up once a month with premium, figure it may help keep things cleaner 🤷🏼‍♂️ figure it can’t hurt…. Only a few more $$

No harm in using regular gas. Premium gas allows the ECU to advance the engine timing which gets you a little more power. If you run regular gas, the ECU just reverts the timing back to top dead center (or a less advanced state) and the engine runs perfectly normally.

The only difference between premium and regular gas is that premium doesn’t ignite as easily as regular, so it works better under higher compression (advanced timing, supercharged applications, etc.) Engines that can’t take advantage of this won’t perform any better on premium than on regular and in some cases actually perform worse.

OK... So it looks like no one has anything bad to say about regular gas and possible harm to the engine. That is good. I have read somewhere that 22' and up should use Premium but it could be just based on manufacturer's recommendations.

Hard to tell if it implies that before 22' models were not designed for premium or if 22' and on needs premium gas.

All Nissan Titans manufactured between 2004 – 2021 take regular, unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87. From 2022 onwards, the Nissan Titan takes premium, unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 91.

I have over 60k on my 20’ using regular 99% of the time.

I tried the 93 octane and noted no difference in gas mileage and minimal bump in power. When u use 93 octane the tranny adapts and upshifts quicker.. giving the feeling of less power…

I use 87 all the time now and have no regrets and more money in my pocket…

Ran 10 tanks of premium when we first got the truck. Then ran 10 tanks on regular 87 octane. Zero difference in performance or mileage. On my 04 the premium did make a big difference because I had it tuned to run on 93 octane. The 2021 is untuned so no need for 93 octane. Hope this helps you bro.

Except when traveling I refuel each Friday - sometimes Saturday, but either way once a week. Likewise except when traveling and forced to take whatever is at an exit, I always choose a top tier gasoline.

Over the past year, for 18,xxx miles and 82 fill ups, I did a month at a time of regular 87, mid grade 89, and premium 91.

I also did two months of Ethanol free regular - which costs as much as premium around where I live.

Finally, I keep a detailed, “OCD meticulous” spreadsheet of my miles and fuel consumption.

Over the year noted above I recorded no difference in fuel economy, and couldn’t feel any difference in engine performance with any grade of gasoline.

Just run what you prefer and don’t worry about it. IMHO.

You wouldn’t happen to be an engineer would you? Also, I think I read somewhere on the forum that you have to reset your ECU to take full advantage of premium. Kind of a fast learning thing. Maybe I’m mistaking that for the CAI?

No sir. I'm just a old fashioned nerd who appreciates accuracy in numbers. I'm now semi-tired, but way back I was a school teacher, theologian, counselor/psychometrist by way of education. Oddly, none of those were focused on dealing with numbers.

Sorry, but I can't speak to the ECU question. @dubyam can you by chance offer some insight at that point?

I don't know. I can say if you have doubts, it cannot hurt to reset the ECM by pulling the negative cable for about 30min or so, but you can try resetting it on a scanner if you have one with that capability.

LOL. Thank you. And I get it. I'm driving a school bus for my retirement job. I have some really good kids on my route, but on some days I'm not sure how much longer my nerves will be "middle school nerves."

The speaker next week might be pretty good. Then again, maybe not. 🤷‍♀️

I'm of the conviction there is no such thing as a bad short speech, especially when there is food served before or afterwards ...
