I've had my 2017 Titan almost two months and the one thing that I have noticed with the 7 speed transmission is its unpredictable shift patterns when it shifts from 4th to 5th. Under normal driving, around 15% of the time it will shift from 4th to 5th at around 55 km/hr BUT the rest of the time, it won't shift into 5th until 70 km/hr. At times, this is getting frustrating. I haven't taken it into the dealership yet as I'm interested in hearing from other Titan owners with the 7 speed transmission to see if anyone else is experiencing this situation.

With more gears comes more variablability. Depending on load and throttle the truck will frequently shift trying to find the best gear for you under the conditions. A lot of chevy owners with the 8 speed complain about the frequent shifting and unpredictability also. I personally haven't had any vehicle with more than 5 gears so I'm just basing this off what I've heard from others.

I'm not exactly surprised this is the case with this being a next gen vehicle in its first year of production. Hopefully that means next year those shifts are smoother and more predictable. It's possible if you look at historical information of similar transmissions that this might prove to be true.

Did you by any chance speak with your dealer?

I've just picked my 2017 Titan pro-4X up a couple days ago and also find the shifting a bit troubling. I find in every shift it seems like the truck is uncertain after upshifting so starts to downshift, then decides with the increased speed that it will hold the upshift but only after starting the downshift.

In other words it revs up and sounds like its hunting for gears, on every shift. Up hills is more noticeable and you can actually feel the truck surging and then hesitating while trying to decide on each up shift.

Have you experienced that? I also find it sometimes wont upshift 4th to 5th and I just cruise along at nearly 2,000 rpm when it would seem to be better at 1,300 or something.

New to the forum, sorry if I messed this post up. It jumped around a bit on me.

I own a 2016 Titan XD with th 7-speed transmission. About 90% of the time, it will not shift up from 4th to 5th until 40mph. In other words, if I'm cruising steady at 39mph, it's staying in 4th gear and doing nearly 2000rpms. The second I get to 40mph, it shifts up to 5th and on. I took it to the dealer twice. First, they reprogrammed the ECU, nothing changed. Second trip, the reflashed the transmission with an update, no change. I called Nissan consumer affairs and filed a case. They called me and said that it was normal. It's weird to me that it will go into 4th at 25mph, but not into 5th until 40mph.

Does everyone else's 7-speed transmission stay in 4th until you reach 40mph?

Just wait until the 10 speed transmission comes out in trucks. That's going to be interesting.

If you're wanting a 10 speed _bicycle_ then you really need to get with the century. They're 21 speed now. :) Or were you referring to a 10 speed manual? Ya lost me.

10 speed automatic that was developed in a joint effort by Ford and Chevrolet will be available in the 2017 Ford F-150 3.5L Ecoboost.
Soon to be available in GM products. So far, I have only read positive reviews about this transmission.

Check with the dealer, they have a bunch of flashes for the transmission.
10spd is in the 2017 Raptor

I understand what your talking about. I own a 10 Titan CC. It has the 5 speed automatic. Below 45 mph, it doesn't know what gear to be in. Don't get me wrong. All Titan transmissions are bullet proof. I would be perfectly happy with a 4 speed automatic. My best guess is that it all has to do with miles per gallon. We don't buy full size big azz trucks and worry about fuel mileage.

Another thing that I have noticed is that if I have the cruise set at 105 km per hour and I hit the accel switch on the cruise to increase my speed, the transmission downshifts and then when it reaches 107 km per hour it then shifts to 7th gear. With this 7 speed tranny, is the 6th gear also an overdrive gear ??

I own a 2016 Titan XD gas engine with 7-speed transmission. About 90+% of the time, it will not shift up from 4th to 5th until 40mph (65km). In other words, if I'm cruising steady at 39mph (63km), it's staying in 4th gear and doing nearly 2000rpms. The second I get to 40mph (65km), it shifts up to 5th and on. I took it to the dealer twice. First, they reprogrammed the ECU, nothing changed. Second trip, they re-flashed the transmission with an update, no change. I called Nissan consumer affairs and filed a case. They called me and said that it was normal. It's weird to me that it will go into 4th at 25mph (40km), but not into 5th until 40mph (65km).

Does everyone else's 7-speed transmission stay in 4th until you reach 40mph (65km), then shift up into 5th?
Will yours, once in a blue moon (and only with the most gradual grandpa acceleration} upshift to 5th sooner.

I am having issues as well, its already been to the dealer once for a check engine light related to the evap canister and they took care of that. While i was there I mentioned the trans and they said it checked out and was normal but I know for a fact its not. Im waiting for a TSB to be released for the 17 gas version non xd since that is what I have. I know the XD has the same trans and engine but try telling that to a service rep at the dealer. Confident it is just some sort of re flash issue. Other than that its been a great truck!

You people forget the 7 speed auto for 2017 is not new. It's first year in production was in the 2016 XD gas version. Thus, this is as good as it gets for now till they either overhaul it or replace it entirely. My 2017 tranny does the same thing. It just sucks what can I say. Not refined and likes to gear hunt :(

Any one gotten any TSB to be applied? I know the XD has one and its the same trans as far as the gas model goes. Dealer won't apply though because it says XD and not TITAN. Said basically what I would have to do is contact Nissan and get an engineer to come take a look and go from there.

I'm truly shocked by these post. Coming from an 8 speed GM, this 7 speed is near flawless. My buddy is a master tech at Infiniti. He mentioned that this is the same 7 speed that has been in the Infiniti QX56 for years and it's bullet proof.

My GM wanted to shift in to 2nd at 5 mph. If cruising slow in a parking lot, the clunk you felt made it seem like the transmission would fall out. it would shift into 3rd by 12 mph, and 4th by 21 mph. If stuck in traffic and cruising between 15- 25 mph per hours, it couldn't decide if it should be in 2nd or 3rd or 4th. It would clunk back and forth between the three. It was the most annoying thing you could ever feel in a vehicle.

The trans also had a ridiculous amount of backlash shifting down to 1st. Coming to a complete stop, the trans would bang into 1st gear. And God forbid if you took off from dead stop and had to suddenly brake, the bang would make you think the transmission exploded.

The GM's also would turn off 4 cylinders, and jump up to a higher gear to improve fuel economy. This would cause an uneven load on the trans making the engine/trans shudder.

And they all drove this way. Every single one. Some took a couple 1000 miles to settle into the clunking. but eventually, they all did it. And GM's response is that it's perfectly normal. Some folks eventually get the torque converter replaced or the get their transmission reflashed into "learn mode". All of these help for a few thousand miles.

This was my biggest reason for going to the Nissan. I think the 7 speed is amazing compared to GM's 8 speed. GM is the big winner in fuel economy, but at the expense of erratic shifting. My Titan was getting 16-17ish mpg on the HWY at 75 mph. That's painful. I easily got 21 mpg at 75 mph in the GM.

I only have 400 mile on the Titan. I hope this improves....a lot.

The guys with the XD that have experienced the issues with the seven speed say that it has gotten better with the reflash they have for it. The thing that sucks is Nissan hasn't realized that this truck more than likely needs that reflash as well so the dealers won't apply it because the techs won't get paid on it since it's not the XD platform, it's not horrible but it definitely hunts and it shouldn't be. Fuel economy is better than what it was in my 2012 so that doesn't bother me plus it's a V8 truck fuel economy is the last thing I think about with these beasts.
I was actually in between this and a brand new 16 Sierra that I was getting a killer deal on but at the end of the day I've always been a Nissan junkie and so has the family, plus I feel like you actually get your monies worth here oppose to other brands where they get real expensive real fast.

i my titan xd reflashed,i find it much better. if you know someone with a good scanner you could check last 5 digits of trans part number, -26x2d was mine. the tsb list to replace software #S 26x2a,26x2b,2x26c,26x2d, my new software is -x.... cant remember the rest. if your number is one of the above and you know some one in service you could probably make it happen.

So far mine has been great for the first week I've had it. No hunting for gears or anything. The only thing I've noticed and it just started today is when i go to leave a parking space of my driveway after the truck has been sitting a while it feels like the brakes engage for split second. When i put in tin drive and go to pull out with little throttle it will roll 3-5 feet and then it sort of comes to a halt but no completely, like i hit the brakes. Anyone know what that may be?
