So I bought a 22 nissan titan sv recently with 4400 miles on it. It sat around 6 months for sale so I expected battery problems. The voltage gauge on my dash showed 14 volts for a minute and then dropped down to 13v and moved and fluctuated bit. Learned it's the smart alternator, but it refused to charge my battery. Only taking it to 12.3 volts and it dropped to 12.0 overnight here in south carolina. I was told to unplug the gray cable on the negative battery terminal to disable the smart alternator. It put out a constant 14.16v at idle as per my cheap scan tool. Multimeter on battery read 13.90. After driving around a few hours it was at 12.8 and sat that way all day until sunset. Dropped to 12.4 overnight. Got a battery charger from harbor freight and even tho it says 12.8 volts the capacity said 60%. Now the entire time the voltage gauge on my dash showed 13.3v and does not move when driving. Alternator does put out 14.16v, battery read 13.90 but gauge always sits at 13.3. It does read correctly with engine off and in acc mode so it's not frozen. I recharged my battery to 13v and 100% capacity. Dash still shows 13.3v. I plugged in the gray cable and the smart alternator doesn't come back on and gauge is still stuck at 13.3v when running.

Is there something wrong? Why is it reading so low. Battery is now at 13v and holds overnight.

Should I care about the smart alternator not coming back on?

Also my commute to work is about 20 minutes, is that too short of a trip?

thats still low. if i remember right, each cell on the battery should read 2.2.

i hope you bought that truck as a certified pre-owned vehicle from the nissan dealer so you can take it back and they can replace the battery for you.

welcome!!

A shop would probably tell you that everything is normal.
My wife's 2013 Infiniti EX37 quit charging several years ago. I had a charger hooked to it and also started the engine and I suppose it woke up the computer. It's worked fine since. But recently the TC, Brake, and ABS lights came on. I suspected the smart charging so I disconnected the computer input. It now charges at 14 volts all of the time but the problem was simply the brake fluid was between the min and max levels and when the brakes were used the level sloshed enough that the lights came on. Adding brake fluid solved the lights coming on problem. I left the computer input disconnected.
