'23 Titan Pro 4X - Solid tone around 40-60 mph

The current issue is a tone (probably around 800 to 1k hz) while driving around 40-60 mph. It gets louder if accelerating and softer if letting of the gas, but is present even at holding speed. Turned off the audio system to make sure it wasn't coming from it. Sounded like it was coming from the rear of the vehicle. It started doing this right before my trip above, but I decided to wait until I got back home and take it to my local service dept. They had 4 different people from the dept test drive it trying to figure it out. Also discussions with people at corporate. The diagnosis was something in the rear differential. They opened and inspected it. I was told after they removed the ABS sensors, they found metal shavings inside. End result is that I'm getting a new differential.

Feeling a bit depressed about this purchase....2 significant issues in the first 2700 miles. 1st was a blown AC hose while I was on a business trip in Virginia. Wouldn't have been a big deal, but it was in the high 80s with 90+% humidity that week with periods of rain. Very uncomfortable in such heat when the rain forces you to close your windows! Had to take it to a dealer to have them fix it. I'm starting to think I may have a potential lemon on my hands. I haven't bought new in over 25 years and my last 3 purchases have been with Chevy. I didn't expect to have issues so soon with a brand new truck. I had to pay for my rental on the A/C repair and will need to file a claim with corporate for reimbursement. Yes, everything is under warranty, but it's a hassle to have to deal with.

But, I digress....anyone else heard of such a problem causing a tone like that? The service rep couldn't explain how, but they are telling me I'm getting a new differential by Monday.

welcome!

thats a huge bummer to have to go through that stuff so early. but its happening on all brands now days, unfortunately. and a few others have also had diffs replaced.

thats a heck of a sound to get from a rear diff. really odd so i hope that is actually the problem. sounds like someone running their finger around a glass with water

Don't be discouraged.....if I told you the issues I had with a brand new Honda. But I digress. I've been reading about the shimmy/vibration issues at freeway speeds some here have been having and it seems to come down to improperly set up differentials. First I've heard of a tone. Further reading led me to find out that this improper setup of differentials is not endemic to Nissan, but other brands as well. So, don't worry too much. They'll make it right. I'm glad that were willing to listen to you and chase the issue down rather than putting "Could not replicate the problem" on your service ticket.

Very rare on rear end. These rears are manufactured by AAM who also supplies this variant for Gm and Ram trucks…

I really have no answer as far as the ac hose. Never seen one go before on these. It’s likely it was manufactured with a defect…

I think we are still experiencing some post covid quality issues here and there.. Regardless of brand…

I can say that I had a similar issue early on with the ABLS, they got the Nissan tech to listen to it and they didn't bother checking why so they replaced the ENTIRE rear end. That was at 7500 miles, well at 52k I just got my entire rear end replaced again due to differential noise, I suspect it was low on fluid based on what they found and the sound.

Long story short, they do seem to have bad quality control checks at factory and dealer. Good news is all replaced under warranty no questions asked and less than a week downtime. Hang in man it's frustrating but crap happens.

This same exact trait was present on the Generation 1 Titan. It more or less was an indication that the rear axle was going to disintegrate or was about to disingtigrate.

On my Gen1 Titan, my first axle was replaced under warranty for that noise. My second axle started making the noise after the warranty was up and eventually blew up around 100,000 miles. I had to have a local mechanic rebuild it and after that it made to 250k with no noises and without disintigrating.

Hope this isn't deja vu all over again with the Titan.

i don't know about motorbiscuit. those dudes are the ones who are all toyota and no nissan, aren't they?

@PRJ
did you end up getting a tundra though? if so, how does the engine feel being a v6 versus a v8? probably not noticeable unless you change exhaust and can hear the difference. i know the ecoboost f150 felt fine when i drove them. if they actually got better mileage than our v8s, i would think they would be an ok truck if nissan stopped the titan.

No. Never bought a Tundra. I'm at ~90k miles right now on my 2018 Pro4x after engine replacement at 15k. So 5 year / 100k warranty is almost up. Next month = 5 years.

Once the warranty is gone I might get out of the truck market and make the move to a 4runner. Not needing a truck as much as I used to. We have a 2016 4runner in the household right now and it's been rock solid. Thinking of getting a 2nd 4runner that is 2020 or newer.

i think most 4 cylinder cars with turbos have had the kinks worked out. they have been making them for a really decent amount of years between ford and some other companies. i know my son's 2014 focus st has been as dependable as anything and it heading up over 150k miles and his 04 volvo v70r (5 cylinder turbo) is at around 300k. thats the one he bought in virginia but that thing is a still a monster for being in a big wagon volvo. it supposedly is a 5.9 0-60 car, and it feels like it could be when you punch it.

toyota has some time building turbo engines now, too, don't they? or did they go hybrid and not work on turbos till recently, like honda?

i am not worried so much about them for longevity, its more the transmissions i worry about in vehicles anymore. that seems to be the problem areas now

One concern I have with turbos on larger, heavier vehicles, is the additional stress on engine parts due to the higher compression turbocharging adds, alongside the additional systems/parts concerns with these twin turbo engines. I like our 2017 3.5 Ecoboost Ford Expedition, but I suspect it won't go as long/far without some more significant maintenance versus the V8 in our 2004 Expy, or my 2011 Titan.

That’s the thing to consider.. We've gone from solid cast iron blocks to thin and light aluminum blocks that have plasma arc cast iron cylinder liners the thickness of a human hair…

0 margin for error… It’s almost like a major milestone for a modern engine to make 100k now…

its possible. i guess you will be one to find out and let us know when it starts having trouble

I'd disagree with the 100k milestone. I don't currently own a vehicle (out of six in my family) under 120k. All have been relatively trouble-free, and at most our total expense to repair on a single vehicle is under $2k over the lifespan. That includes my 158k Titan which I've owned since new in 2011, as well as my wife's 2017 Expedition, and a 2012 Rogue, 2011 Ford Fusion, 2000 F150, and 2012 Toyota Corolla.

Realistically, with proper maintenance and upkeep, I'd expect 250k from a vehicle with less than $4k of repair expenses. That's been our norm over the past 20yrs.

So my fishing buddy just bought 2023 Tundra TRD Off-Road. Had a chance to drive it and check it all out last night. Nissan Titan is way behind compared to the Tundra. My Titan feels so dated now. Lots of great features and a nice ride.

Unfortunately I think Toyota screwed up in the looks department again so I would never buy one for that reason. That big azz grill up front is fugly.

we were up there in colorado springs two weeks ago, too. my son likes to take us to the Cheyenne mountain range and normally, he would take us in the wrangler and all we see is vehicles you mentioned. this time though, we had the mazda3 and he had my ranger single cab so no off-road fun.
