Bakflip install with factory drop in bed liner

HI,

Ok, i was told that the bakflip would fit no problem with the factory bedliner. I got the G2 bakflip and found that the factory bedliner does hit the rails and needed to be cut.

I had to dremel off about 1 inch off the tips that lip over and catch the bed lip.

Here you can see the cut bedliner tips:

I also thought i would provide the dimensions of where exactly to drill into the bed liner to route the drain tubes: Measurement from first bolt (closest to cab)

I guessed based off of other pics posted I saw and luckily got so close that I was able to pull the step drill bit to nearly exactly center...:eyebrow:
I just continued drilling into the metal existing hole opening it up just enough.

I used a step drill bit from harbor freight and drilled out the existing hole in the bed to 7/8" and that let the tubes fit snug - had to semi force the tube through, which was good, cause it held the tube in place and didn't flex back out.....

You can see the step drill bit I used here:

Impressions:
1. Bakflip packaging was top notch. they use bagged spray foam that cures and molds to every inch so my worries of shipping damage was for nothing.
2. Wasn't happy having to cut my bed liner - especially when i was told i wouldn't need to - either way, i plan on doing lineX or Rhino later down the road.
3. Wasn't happy with the provided instructions, as they were general instructions showing a Chevy......If there truly is a way to install this thing with out cutting my bed liner their shii tty instructions didn't explain it on a "TITAN"
4. seals and build quality look great.
5. cable pulls and mechanisms work well.
6. Overal happy with the bakflip for now, will use the hell outta it and report back later.

ya its easy to install............

just wanted to post mainly because if there is anyone else like me with the factory bed liner considering a bakflip they can at least know whats all required (as in cutting).....

some of my friends didnt like the cutting issue because like me, they would plan to sell the bedliner on Craigslist or something to help offset the cost of lineX or RhinoLiner....

It looks like your clamps are angled outward. If they are, that is causing your bakflip rails to lift up. You will need to adjust them some so it makes a flush tight fit. Mine originally the tailgate would close when I first installed it with the bakflip closed. But after they sent me the modified clamps, it can't close now unless the bakflip is raised up.

Looks good though!

Nice write up!! Don't want to hi-jack your thread but for those who have Utilitracs you have to flip them upside down if you still want to use them. The rails are slightly long (designed for no-utilitracs).

no not at all........good info for sure...as long as its on topic (bakflip related) it makes a thread worthwhile...

yes, the rails do hang down a bit more than what you would think is needed.....my guess is that backflip uses that same rail extrusion on many different backflip models on other trucks........trucks with bigger lip hangover or what not.....

the titan lip is small and you kinda gotta look up back there to ensure you are clamping a good amount of area when tightening everything up..

Cool, Jason.. In that case... While on the topic.. Hope this helps... The only drilling needed is to enlarge your draintube holes.

With the rails flipped:

I got mine from Auto Anything . com call mike @ ext 623

I will get you some of the clamps Jason.

Here is my drain tubes. I bought skinnier ones with a adapter and it works great. No need to make the hole bigger and worry about rust. This picture was before my modified clamps. You can see the angle there.

This cover looks great! Thanks for sharing the information. Can any of you guys with the cover post some overall photos of the cover installed? Do any of you think the HD cover is worth the extra cost?

is anyone else not to thrilled with the whole prop rod mount end??? I wont be doing that very much at all, but i think im plan on changing it up like this:

I don't like how its meant to lean on your window and the rod just forces it up against to keep it in place.....works fine i guess, but i have a few spare ball mounts to where I plan on putting on a double ended socket that i can easily remove...

I'm honestly looking to mount a ball mount bracket like this:

Then on that end mount one of these easy pull back quick release ends:

The G1 had gas shocks to hold them up before. Maybe it didn't hold up and it didn't hold up on the freeway or was too much money for parts for BAK

I had the g1 original one that bak came out with Julian at bak hooked me up with the g2. He explained the differences between the 3. Hd is full aluminum panels vs the g2 is aluminum rails Fiberglas panels. Hd is good if you place items on top. I don't do the g2 is perfect. Save your money if you're gonna spend that much go for the rollbak. I thought of the rollbak but since the cc has a small bed I didn't want to lose 9" of bed space as the size of the canister. Also you can't use the bed extenders. I use mine all the time.

The G2 is also all aluminum panels now. Just lower grade hardware.

I heard Acorns falling on the G2 panels can dent it per other forums like the Ford forums. Reason I went with the F1 so it won't dent as easy.

Anyone with Rhino liner that can comment?

I hear its more "rubber like" and will fade, but im thinking that would be good for me as 99% of the time I will have a this bakflip installed.....so the rubber like Rhino can be used to keep things from sliding around like it would with LineX?

I have a bak flip and the quality has been terrible - the last four years all the stuff held together with sticky back tape has come loose...you know the pull release cable track on all three pannels and one of the shocks mount has come loose. It looks good on the truck but the fit and finish stinks, I wrote to back flip but they don't seem to give a flip....

Let me know how yours has held up:bangit:

^ The existing hole in the truck is only slightly smaller than the hosing that is sent with the backflip...either just simply measure the hole yourself or just run over to homedepot/lowes and hand carry that section of hose that bakflip sends with their unit with you and get the next size smaller.....while your there, buy an adapter to mate the two....its probably a 5/8 ID hose with thin wall tubing, or 1/2" with thick wall tubing...

as for rust, i mean, c-mon, your talking about cutting an existing hole only slightly larger....the only exposed unfinished metal will be the thickness of the cut edge.....you could shove the hose in there and add some sealant if you want...or get a little hobbiest brush and paint on some primer.......were not talking a large area here guys....abet, also covered by the bakflip so not directly hit by rain either...

though i think its cool you can do the adapter and next size smaller tube...the set up i have i feel looks much cleaner...

Sorry to revive this thread. I just wanted to make sure that every Titan has these drain holes before I start drilling in the drop-in bedliner, and that they are all in the same spot in relation to the first bolt
I have a 2008 SE CC.

Re: Re: Bakflip install with factory drop in bed liner

Thank you! Finally found another T in the land of Ford and Chevy called Texas. Hole location confirmed. Let the drilling begin!!

It'll fade, just ever so slightly. Had to get 2 replacement panels for my Rollbak, and they're definitely darker and shinier than the rest. But not enough to bother me too much :)
